Shift tower bolt

So anyway, I had my shift tower bolt shear off and my tranny got locked in second gear. I couldn't pull the tower cause of it being locked in gear so I drilled a 1/2" hole in the top of the tower and was able to fit a screwdriver in there to slide the forks into neutral to remove the tower so I wouldn't have to pull the trans.

Anyway, I drained the gear oil, and have been hunting for two hours with a flexi magnet and can't find the damn bolt head. I plan on using a cam scope tomorrow, but is it possible the trans magnet got it? I really don't want to just leave it in there. Thanks!

Have you drained the fluid? The plug opening is a good place to use a slim pen (magnet on collapsible antenna style handle) magnet to search for it. IF you don't get it remember the pictures that have been posted of broken gearcases when the bit jamms between gear and housing.

Yea both plugs have been pulled and fluid drained. And I see those pics so I have been at it for a few more hours now. I only have the flexi magnet but I'll get a shaft magnet and try that as well.

I'm just worried it made its way to the tranny magnet which is pretty strong. I'll scope it tomorrow and if not, I guess I'll pull the power train again. But I really don't want that...

Ok, so you drilled through the tower. I would be removing the transmission anyway to clean out all of the filings that got into it. And of course if you can't find the bolt you need to pull it to find the bolt head.

As for the filings, I was able to get the tower up enought to fit a flat, like super flat sponge with some grease on it under the top plate, (it wasn't a big enough gap for a tool tho) and drilled down into that with vacuum up top so none/very little filings fell in.

My question is about the magnet and how strong of another magnet I need to get the bolt of that one if that's where it is.

Well damn. Thanks for the advice guys, but it seems I will be pulling the tranny/engine again. Haha let's see if I remember how to do it.

My bolt sheared in such a way that the extra piece was inside of the tower. You may want to look there before you pull your transmission.
