Thread: Clean hit or dirty? Liambus on Fanelli

Default Clean hit or dirty? Liambus on Fanelli

Okay hockey fans, I've watched this over and over...but the hit that Liambus threw here looks clean. Needless, the OHL has suspended him for the entire season today.

The player on that got hit, Ben Fanelli, got life-flighted to Hamilton with major a concussion, skull and jaw fractures, an action that was probably more prominent of a loose helmet that came off on the hit. Seems more like 'punished action by result' instead of by cause.

As an armature hockey coach...we tell kids to go hard when on the ice. I don't know...this is very similar to the new rules the NFL has set up on tackeling QB's...I just don’t get it.

Clean hit, vicious, but clean, what's the problem? He got suspended for that???

At 39 seconds it shows the hitter smashing the guy in the head with his shoulder. I would suspend him, clearly a little rough for the situation and was planning on a 150% hit regardless of what the other guy was doing. He clearly wasn't planning on slowing down at all.

I cant really tell, but it looks like stick/forearm to head, not shoulder to body.

I would agree with the suspension if a slow-mo vid indicated head only contact.

If he makes that hit open-ice, it's a non-issue. The fact that he lit him up into the boards like that is why he got suspended. It looks like he may have gotten his elbow up on him, but I'm having a hard time seeing and could be wrong.

Suspension, I can see... it's a dangerous hit. As far as suspending him the rest of the year, if I could see another angle so I could tell if he got the elbow/forearm up into his head I'd be able to form an opinion on that. If he did get the elbow into his head, then yes: suspend him the rest of the year.

It is a hard hit. Plain and simple. I doubt he really wanted to hurt the guy that badly....but it is part of sports.

Looks to me like it was going to be a normal, hard hit but the guy tried to get out of the way which put him in a bad position.

I cannot believe he got suspended for that. Guys come in trying to hit each other, faster than that, especially against the boards. It's not Mike Liambus' fault the guy put himself in a bad position to take the hit. He was going shoulder check all the way until the guy tried to duck it. Obviously I feel bad for the result, but that's hockey!

His team is down 2-0 midway through the second and he's trying to get something going by creating a turnover.
