Help Re-Setting Axle in Wheel Hub

Had wheel bearing issues on front passenger's side...purchased new wheel hub with bearing [the old bearings were very bad] and managed to take off the old wheel hub. My issue now is re-setting the axle in the new wheel hub. Have gotten it about halfway in without using any force but does any one out there have any suggestions about getting the last half in position. Would tightening the axle nut draw the axle into place? Thanks.

Take the CV out of the wheel bearing and inspect the splines for any damage or buildup. If theres slight damage you can fix it with a dremel, and wirewheel out dirt etc. Signifigant damage and the CV head needs to be replaced.

If theres nothing in the splines just push the hub on as far as you can and let the nut do the rest. Just make sure everything is lined up first so you don't wreck your axle.

Thanks

Thanks

will give everything the once over one more time but didnt notice anything before...scoring or what not, axle seemed in very good shape. would applying the brake and putting car in gear keep the axle/spindle from rotating while screwing on axle nut??

You should not put the car in gear while trying to get the axle in, you could cause serious damage/injury.

Get the axle in the bearing as far as you can and use the nut to pull the head the rest of the way in. if you can't get the nut on by your own strength something is wrong with the cv head or the bearing. Also, a little grease smeared in the bearing splines might help the head slide in easier.

Seating that Axle...

Seating that Axle...

Did manage to fully re-seat the axle in the hub finally thanks to some advice I found in Chilton's...place wheel hub on the axle--providing proper support--and with the axle nut started several turns on the axle, install the brake rotor with two bolts...at this point insert a pry bar into one of the rotor's vent openings [on the rotor's right side to tighten, the left side to loosen, if that is your problem]...the pry bar's sharp end grabs nicely into the rotor's vent and keeps the rotor/spindle assembly from turning, which is a pain when you are trying to torque the axle nut...the arrangement feels a bit haphazard but with some patients it does do the job. What more can you ask for?

Sometimes you can start on an odd angle. Make sure the top of the strut is loose. Also spray some PB Blaster or WD40 inside the hub. Usually a few wacks with a hammer helps. Rubber mallet is the best so you don't hurt your new bearing.
