Question, when driving I am getting a whining sound from the front end that increases with speed. I can feel a vibration (very slight) in the steering wheel and on the gas pedal. When I turn the wheel slightly to the left, it goes away. I am guessing it is a wheel bearing or a bad tire...any thoughts?

Yes, it sounds like a wheel bearing. It should get worse if you turn the steering wheel. If you turn it to the left and it gets louder it is the right wheel. If you turn it to the right it is the left wheel. I let mine go for too long and I ended to replace both front wheel bearings, the driveshaft and both rotors. Thats was about $600.

Yeah, thats definetely a wheel bearing. If you let it go to long it will damage the entire hub assembly. I found that out the hard way. Not a cheap part!

A novice mechanic friend told me that the bearings on these cars are a pain to remove. What can I expect to pay for the bearing itself and how much time would this repair normally take someone skilled to do? Thanks everyone for your help!

I took out the entire knuckle assembly and had one pressed in at napa. The cost of the bearing and labor was $60.

They're a PITA because a shop press is required.

Taking the whole knuckle to someone who has the press is usually the most expedient way of getting it done for the least amount of money as indicated.
