so it seems like there is a good chance for me to take my clutch out this coming weekend. I am also thinking of inspecting the flywheel, which was resurfaced about 4 months ago. IIRC, this flywheel had to be resurfaced at two different places, because it had a "stepped" design or something of that sort, right?

IIRC, the shop that did the resurfacing only did one surface of it (where clutch disk makes contact with flywheel). I told them that there was another part that had to be resurfaced, and they though I was joking with them. So I am not sure what two surfaces have to be done. Can someone please show me a pic with the two places that have to be resurfaced.

Since it was resurfaced already once (partially), i guess the gap of this "step" or whatever it is called, has increased. so does someone knows exactly how thick this gap/step should be on a new flywheel, so if necessary we can adjust it by resurfacing the other surface which was not done before...

...i hope my post makes sense :)

Not sure what you're saying. I X'd the 2 planes. The dowels have to be pulled on the upper. The main contact area and the upper where the dowels are need to be machined the same amount.

how do I remove the dowels? just pull them?
last time they only resurfaced the lower (main) contact area. how could that have affected my clutch? could that be a reason for a failing bearing?

since they only did that main part, do i need a new flywheel, or can i tell them to machine the other part with the dowels only, so they both end up being machined? is there a little "step" between these two? the main area sits a little lower than the one with the dowels, right? is so, how thick is this step/edge, so now if they resurface the dowels area only, they should now how much material to remove...

or am i thinking in the wrong direction? thanks for the info

Certainly it could have effected it! It's hard to tell if they can machine the same amount without knowing what they did the first time. I have not personally removed the dowels. Just dropped the FW off to a buddy at Napa and had them take care of it. Had them do all of FW resurfacing w/o issue. I'm guessing this is part of the reason for the Spec failures. ;) I think it's about $30. You might need to start with a different flywheel that hasn't had machine work and take it to a good shop.

i agree. but i guess that if I know how think the edge of a non machined flywheel should be, i could measure the edge on mine now and see how much was machined before. then mashine the upper edge by the same amount...brilliant!!:)

yeah i paid $30 for at the shop before but do they do that at Napa??

If I put in a slightly used Fidanza, and mate it up to a brand new SVT clutch, do I need to do anything special with the flywheel? Or just bolt it in?

FYI...Ally flywheels,Fidanza,Spec etc have a bolted in steel insert and are NOT able to be machined. A new insert has to be fitted with new bolts etc and it must be set up for no runout,...most have a return and insert fitting service
