Cracked windshield

Well as if finals aren't stressful enough, I go out to my car and find a crack about half the length of the windshield that propagated from a microscopic little nick on the bottom driverside corner that I couldn't even see I had from inside. Think also maybe I'd be lucky enough to get it to travel across the bottom or something, nope, right up through my line of sight.

So I was just wondering, how does insurance handle a cracked windshield, if they do at all? If they don't cover it, which I'm sure each plan is different, generally what would a windshield run me to get it replaced. Also, the big thing is I just had it inspected last month, and I was curious what happens with the inspection stickers and if you have to get it reinspected?

Any comments would be appreciated!

In Massachusetts, glass is covered for free if you have comprehensive insurance. If you have liability only then it is not. It cost me $250 to have the windshield replaced on the Contour. In MA again, the car does not need to be reinspected with new glass (they rip off the sticker and re-stick it onto the new glass).

Call your insurance company, find out if you are covered under your current policy.

(And the guy screwed up the install too, he put the top rubber strip on upside-down so it didn't match up perfectly with the side plastic strips .. but that's a rant for another day)

Yea I'm hoping it is covered in PA, since I do have full coverage, I'm going to call later today. I could let it be, since I did just get it inspected, but it looks terrible right infront of your face as you drive. Even if it isn't covered, $250 is less than I had first thought, so...

Where did you go to get yours done, if you don't mind me asking? Local buisness, or was it a chain type place?

thanks

A lot of times though, the windshield will cost like $50 more than your deductable.. so it's not really worth claiming and risking a shady insurance rep increasing your rates on you for the claims (even though they shouldn't.. but some do).

You can get a free estimate of repair at most places and go from there..

Local business. I was dissatisfied with the Contour's glass repair (as stated above) so I went with a different business in Cambridge for the Maxima when that one cracked.

Even if your insurance company does not cover it, they will have local recommendations (as I found with the Contour). Failing that, you can go on the Internet and go with someone you want, which is what I did with the Maxima. I didn't even talk to the insurance company for that repair, the glass repairmen handled everything.
