I cant remember if its normal or not. I'm talking front to back, either in neutral or in gear, No difference. I may be retarded which I most likely am, but someone reassure me. LOL

Didn't Terry Haines do a write up on this on the "other" forum?
I tried to go back and see, but the site is under maintenance.

what "other" forum are you talking about? i would like to see this article and possibly contact him about some work. I have play in my knob too and i know it isn't healthy i have about 2 inches of play or so when in gear and i know that can't be right.

I wasn't aware that there were more than 2 contour forums...
but, fordcontour.org the "other" "boring" forum..

I just had that fixed at a transmission shop because I didnt have the tool to adjust it. I have no play while the stick is in gear now, before i had around 1 or 2 inches. Its in the ford manual, that is where I tried to figure it out.

i think mine could be used as a reference of what's best. mine seems to be about as good as it should be (i just bought the car), but mine has about 1/4"-1/2" of play. it seems to be a very tight tranny, most likely it's been treated well, as it's very low mileage.

FWIW, when aircougar was doing my headers, he found that I had pretty much no rubber bushing on my shift cable. We replaced it with a better one and my shifting is way better and there is much less shifter play.

before you go and adjust shift cables check the condition of the bushings ... you shouldn't need to adjust the cables and if you do you Terry did make a write up on how to do it ...

I've got about an inch side to side. So is that sorta normal?

I had really bad side to side play in my stock shifter, but over the weekend I just installed my B&M and have VERRRRRRY little side to side play now. still have the front to back, but it doesn't bother me like the side to side did, and isn't as bad either...

Mine was extremly sloppy a few months back, I made a call to Bill jenkins and about $12.00 later I had new end links and the shifter is stiffer than me on viagra now.

All you people jumping on tower bolts, and shift ends..

try pulling your shifter boot up and looking at the bushings that hold the shifter tight... then look at the other end of the cables (just before going in to the tranny) and repeat the process.

This is MORE likely your problem.

what tool are you talking about. all you do is push the orange tabs in hold the stick in the center and release the orange clips. ther is no special tool that i know of....
