My check engine light goes on for a couple days, then it goes off for a few days. Then back on and so on.

There is a noticeable burning smell coming from my engine bay after driving for awhile. I also noticed that my drive belt and pulleys have rust all over them. My thought is some kind of liquid has to be leaking. And maybe even spraying out from somewhere.

I had the codes read a couple months ago when this started. All they told me was it was an "EGR". Which they said was most likely a vacuum leak. So after having three vacuum leaks fixed, I'm still having the same problem.

If anybody can give me some ideas as to what's wrong with my Mystique I'd really appreciate it.

Get the codes read again and post the exact codes. Always post the engine, year and mileage. You have your tranny listed in your signature.

Its probably an issue with the DPFEGR sensor, this sensor senses exhaust EGR flow and is a common problem with fords. Have the codes checked again w/ the light on. I am currently having the same issue w/ my car minus the smell. Have it checked if the are codes 1401 (EGR flow insufficient) 1402 (EGR flow excessive) and code i beleive 1405 (Ford specific for the DPFEGR) its about 99% that the sensor. Have the codes checked and reply with info.

My car is the stock 2.5L V6 with auto trans. It has about 81,000 miles on it.

I forgot to mention that about a month ago I looked under the engine area after a 2 hour highway drive. The entire area looked completely soaked. And it wasn't raining so that fluid was coming from somewhere on my car.

I'll have to make a run to advance auto since they check the codes for free. Then I'll post the exact codes. But it'll have to wait until the weekend. So please check back later. Thanks!

I just want to have a good idea as to what I'm in for when I take it in for repairs. Getting screwed around with by a mechanic isn't something I want to get into.

If you know what the fluid was, it would help narrow things down. At that side (passenger side) of the engine, it could be PS Fluid leaking from the pump seal. Check your PS reservoir to see if it is low. Also, have you been losing coolant or engine oil recently?

I wish I knew what type of fluid it was too.

The level in the coolant reservoir has stayed constant.

The last time I checked the oil, it was fine. But that was after that 2 hour drive a little over a month ago.
I will definitely make sure to check the oil tomorrow.
I'll also check the power steering fluid.

I'll post my findings then. Thanks.

You check oil once a month?????????!!!!!!!!!
I have heard of people who don't check their engine oil at all. Which is why I advocate a 3 month/3K mile oil change. At least then, the oil gets "checked" at least once every 3 months or 3k miles.

I check my engine oil every other fill up (sometimes this is every or every :blackeye: other day).

Welll now you can yell at me too.... I dont check my oil often either:blackeye: ... It happens... And i think im a little? bit over my oil change time?....Eh eh eh
