I just changed the fluid on my 98 CSVT. It was dark dark red, almost a gray color, so I figure it hasnt been changed in its 134k history. I had the front end up on jackstands, and pumped some R.P through until I could see it coming out the other end. I ended up putting about 2 1/2 qts in when the car was up on the stands. Is this sufficient when the cars front end is elevated like that? The shifts seem to be firmer now, is this a good thing?

Thanks,
Adam

The fill to spill method is advised when the car is level on the ground. My car took a little over 3 quarts. I advise you do it this way.

I'm pretty sure that everyone gets close to 3 quarts in. The fill to spill method is used when the car is flat on the ground. You can get to the fill plug under the battery with the car flat on the ground.

Revised 2000+ MTX's took 2.1 Qts. All the rest 3 or fill till spill. I make sure the car is on level ground.

The spec I remember is 2.7 until part way through the 2000 model year (after the first of the year) is 2.2.

Mine takes about 2.7 to 2.8. If I force more in it, I get some weapage along the seam.

I fill to spill with the front end up for access. I leave the upper plug off while I lower the car and let a little spill out, then lift the car again and install the plug.

Is it ok to have too much fluid inside the trans? I mean if I put the rest of the 3rd quart in once the cars jacked up, and put back the plug will it be ok? I have about 2.5 qts inside the trans now, I am beginning to feel like this is not enough.

Ok, I don't think I will add anymore. I guess 2 1/2 is normal. :)

BTW: the shifts are alot firmer. Is this a good thing?

If you have the early trans, 2.7 quarts is the correct level. You really should add a bit more.

As I posted earlier, you can lift the front of the car and fill the trans through the fill hole, leave the fill plug out and lower the car with a catch pan underneath, then lift the car and reinstall the plug.

If I leave the full 3 quarts in mine, it tries to find a way out so I would not recommend it. Not enough and I would be concerned.

With some experience and thin arms, you can do this all with the car sitting on the ground, I have the past couples times.

Otherwise Big Jim's method is great.

Also, I don't know about the capacity and when the change really happened.

I have a CSVT built 3/99 and it seems to start spilling around 2.2 qts. Over that and it dribbles out, and yes my garage floor is level.

Slightly overfill, and let it spill, that way no matter which trans you have you are safe.

I would Def add the rest of the quart into the tranny. Its better Safe than sorry?

some time and a bottle of tranny oil!

or you can rebuild it after it breaks, one is cheaper than the other think about it!
