So as it turns out, my gf's mom wouldn't let her buy the Contour. I don't really know what's up her butt, but her mom was trying to force her to buy a '96 Neon with 120k for $1100  :nonono:. I even picked up the little rubber seal to fix the PS leak (thanks Greg) and yet, her mom didn't care. I'm really disappointed and now it seems she won't be joining the Contour family :(. I'm going to keep on the lookout for another, though.

Tell her that if the timing belt snaps on the car you need a whole new head. Head gaskets go out like mad on them. Very expensive expensive repairs. My fiance had a 98 Neon at one point and she said the best thing that happened to it was it being totaled in an accident.

I'm pretty upset about this, not gonna lie. And I did tell her mom the Neon was an interference engine, and a bad one at that. Didn't phase her, no matter what I said about it. But as it turns out, that Tour we were looking at sold on Saturday to a guy who owned a SFSVT! At least it went to a good home. I'm thinking someone on the forums bought it? :ponder: The guy at the dealership was a really nice guy and was very knowledgeable about the Contour surprisingly. I think I'm gonna bring my gf down there this weekend to see if they have any other nice cars for cheap. They sold a nice '95 Taurus last night for $1200, too! *sigh* Hopefully my gf will finally get some good luck and get a car without her mom interfering :nonono:

Ask her mon straight up if she knows anything about cars and how horrible neons can be....especially once they get up there in miles. I would tell her that there are a few cars I would rule out completely. Neons, Cavs, Sunfires.

Oh don't worry. I dragged my gf along to a NECO/CEG meet instead of her mom dragging her to see the Neon. I wouldn't allow it. The Neon sold to someone else. The problem I am having is her mom. Her mom has a friend who "knows" cars. He instantly didn't like the Contour because it has a PS leak (I have the part to fix it, I'm pretty sure), and didn't like noise of the Zetec . Said it had a "rap," but it was just the sound of the injectors and possibly the infamous Zetec tick. I didn't hear the tick too well, personally, but it was barely there...So her mom just didn't want to get it. How lame is that? I'm highly disappointed with her mom for being so narrow-minded. She thinks I know nothing and that the Contour "isn't dependable." I told her it'd be the most dependable car because I know of people who can fix it at a good deal and can diagnose problems easily. I'm just ranting now, I'll stop, haha.

well like I said in that text message to you I would of personally passed over it also because of the ps leak. That was the only noticable problem with the car.

The engine sounded fine, i don't know if it was bad for that car or good for mine but that zetec sounded like mine with double the miles, nothing to be concerned with, most likely made some noise after sitting for a long time ... completely normal.

Leave a picture of the East German Trabant on her desk or counter. This little turd is the car that Car and Driver referred to has having "been around the bloc." Heh, heh. They were notoriously unreliable. Perhaps this will impress upon her that she should consider something a bit better built for her daughter.

More seriously, trying to beat this woman into submission through argument may not be the most effective method of persuasion. Instead, you might scare up a Contour sales brochure from the era in question and leave it for her on a coffee table, etc. I would argue against presenting it to her directly, for if she finds it, the idea may more easily become her own. You're likely not dealing with a woman who suffers from Contour antipathy, but rather one that is determined to implement her own idea. If you give her a chance to make your idea hers, you may find that you're no longer ensnared in her senseless argument.

Here's an opportunity for me to throw in yet another car ad:

The second one sounds great....just check the harness if you lok at it. You might be able to sneak in under the deadline for the recall on it

I'm not familiar with the wiring harness. I hear about it all the time, but I've never had a problem with mine . Where exactly is it and what should I be looking for? Maybe the wires melting?

The plastic coating breaking apart and falling off of the wires....causes shorts and all that good stuff. There is a 10 year and like a 100K mile warrenty on the cars....that is why you would want to look into it first and see if it has it and if the car is still covered

you might get lucky on that, maybe the low miles, if its real might help also ... my 95 has signs but it still works, knock on wood ....

Well now I know what to look for, but where does this occur? I'm a n00b when it comes to cars so some things I'm still not familiar with. Like I said, I hear mention of the infamous pre98 wiring harness, but I don't know where it's located:troutslap:
