99 Contour Automatic won't shift

My 99, 4 cyl, automatic contour won't get out of 1st gear. I checked the tranny fluid and it appears to be OK. Could it be linkage?? Any ideas?

is your CEL on?

prior to this happening did your "O/D off" light ever start flashing at you?

From what you describe I would say you need a new MLPS (Manual lever position sensor). which takes about an hour of your time to replace.

I did not see the O/D light flash.

Yes. I put it in Drive but it won't get out of 1st.
