Ok I have two noises I am worried about. I have a 98 Mystique 5 speed. The first noise is when I'm driving at lower rpms and I shift quick it makes a loud noticeable clack sound when I put the stick in gear before I release the clutch. Second is in just about any gear, especially at higher rpms, when I'm releasing the clutch and I start to accelerate, there is a rattling noise and I've heard it in all gears. Any ideas?

okay, the "clack" noise, just might be the sound of the gears changing, the MTX-75 (5 speed manual) trans for the contour was a fairly noisey transmission.

Now if you can physically, noticeably feel the "Clack" then I would say you might have a bad trans mount, allowing the transmission to hit the subframe whenever the motor/trans moves.

Ok, I don't physically feel it so nothing to worry about there. But anybody have any idea about the rattling?

where exactly is the rattling coming from? is it a shaking in the steering wheel? is there a humming noise associated with it? Needs more specifics.

I "sounds" like its coming from underneath the car. No shaking or humming. It's hard to pin point because it only happens when moving. If I had to guess it would be around the back of the engine.

I really dont know what you are describing, my best guess is an exhaust leak.

I doubt theres an exhaust leak, I think I would at least smell it? Maybe it's a loose ring or bearing, who knows. I was thinking of getting a new clutch to see if its the problem, if not, this ones got almost 160,000 miles on it so it probably wouldnt hurt

I do have an oil leak though, right above the Y in the Y-pipe. It leaks on the exhaust pipe and smokes when I run it hard. All of the smoke is coming from oil dripping on the y pipe though. Could that possibly be making the rattling noise. It is a "high pitched" rattling.

I think you might be hearing your valves, which isnt bad by any means can you expecially hear it if you hold the car at a high RPM? like say on the freeway in 4th gear doing 70? I bet thats what you are hearing.

Probably. As long as it's nothing to worry about. I can't believe how well the engine runs for almost 160,000 on it. I just cleaned the upper and lower intakes a few days ago and yea they were bad but it runs even better now. I haven't had any major problems with it and I can't wait to get my 3.0!
