I'm not sure how many outside of Michigan know of Mackinac Island, (pronounced Mackinaw) but it's quite a popular spot around here. For those who don't know, it's an island where there are no motor vehicles (well, except a fire truck and an ambulance) so everyone gets around either by foot, bike or horse. They bill it as a step back in time and it really is pretty cool. It's located in the Straits of Mackinac, the thin band of water where lakes Michigan and Huron meet between the upper and lower penninsulas. Anyway, last Saturday my fiance (Bella on the boards) and I took the day and went there. Rode over on the 8:30 ferry and came back on the 6:00 and took lots of pics, and I just thought I'd share some them with y'all since it was such a beautiful day to be there.

First up, sunrise over the Island from the Mackinaw bridge

Just a cool pic of the towers I took driving over

Main street when we got there, by the time we got back after riding around the island (8 miles) it was packed with tourists and carriages and such

Then we climbed up to arch rock

and had this view

looking down at the road through the arch

Later on we ran across this sitting across the street from some of the nicer houses and had to take a pic

One of the attractions on the island is a place called The Butterfly House, basicly, there's a greenhouse type area filled with plants and they have all these butterflies from all over just free roaming inside. I wasn't quite sure about it at first, but once we went in, it was actually pretty cool, here are a couple of the cooler looking ones I snapped pics of.

I'm also a freightor geek (so is she, though she hates to admit it) and we had 2 come through while we were on the island, snapped this pic of the second one heading towards the bridge

And finally, a pic of the bikes lined up at the end of the ferry dock. Many of these had cobwebs and stuff on them so I don't know if people just forgot them or what, but it was pretty wil anyway. Oh, and one shot of one of the cooler bikes we saw.

Overall, we had a great time spending the day in a really cool place. I'm not sure how many on here will find this interesting, but I thought I'd share anyway. If anyone is ever looking for a neat vacation, might I suggest looking into Mackinac Island.

Nice shots Todd, reminded me though I didn't post any of the shots of the Fort. So, here's the fort, fully restored and operated as a historic site with re-creations of typical activities of the days when the fort was active, including canon's being fired every couple of hours.

Mackinac Island is great for a day or two every 5 to 7 years. Not much changes there and it's pretty pricey.

Some of the homes off the beaten path are spectacular.
