V6 Duratec - rough idle
I have a 2000 Contour V6 SE (duratec) with 143,000 miles on it (commuter vehicle) that is idling rough and will eventually die if I don't give it gas. A smiliar issue happened almost the exact same time last year (Dec.) when the temps dropped to the high teens (live in Wisconsin). I resolved that issue by replacing the IAC. Now the low temps are back and so is the rough idle. I have purchased another IAC and will have it by tomorrow, but I thinking it could be something else since the car never had the "moosing" issue this time like it did last year. I replaced the fuel filter about a month ago so it should be getting enough gas and the alternator and battery were replaced about 3 months ago. The car runs fine while being driven but can stall once I come to a stop. By the way, the check engine light has not come on for this issue. Any ideas?

I've had a really rough idle for the past three days and today it got really bad. My car would start at 2000 rpms then drop to 500 and then fluctuate between 200 and 1100 until it would just drop to 50 and die. i wanted to clean the iac but decided to buy a tps (throttle position sensor)http://www.autozone.com/R,APP267317...partType,00136/shopping/partProductDetail.htm. I put in the new tps and the car got a lil better (hence the phrase "lil better"). so, i decided to reset the adaptive strategy http://www.contour.org/ceg-vb/showthread.php?t=9184, thanks to Big Jim, and now my car is running much better.

I replaced the IAC and went ahead and cleaned off the throttle body with throttle body cleaner. I checked the sensors for dirt and they seemed just fine. The car is still having the idle issue, so I'm thinking of replacing the throttle position sensor, but where exactly is it located?

that would be the black thing with a wire harness plugged into it on your throttle body.

One thing I forgot, after I cleaned off the throttle body and put everything back together, I noticed a strong rubber burning smell. And actually I have smelt this before, probably the last 4 or 5 months. I never looked into it, but it smelled a lot after I let it idle (though it wasn't idling that well). I thought it could be because of the rough idle, but has anyone else smelled a burning rubber smell before after the car has been driven?

I replaced the TPS, and the issue isn't resolved, but I did notice that the accelerator cable is loose...and actually both cables that connect to the throttle body. Shouldn't these cables be taunt?

Actually, I found another post about testing the Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF), I started the car and when it started to idle rough I removed the connector to the MAF and the car started to idle a lot better and never killed on me. So I'm thinking I need a new MAF sensor, but first I'll see if I can clean it since it's not a cheap part ($104.00 or so).

I believe brake fluid cleaner would be ideal to clean the MAF - won't leave any residue....
