high rpm loss of power

when i rev the motor past 5500rpm it sounds like a cylinder is spitting and not firing with a slight jerk felt in the vehicle. this gets more and more apparent as the rpms rise and it does not let the motor go past 6000rpm. it feels like its really falling on its face at that point. i've replaced all spark plugs, wires, ignition coil. also the battery light flashes when its at that high of an rpm and at low rpms below 2000 it misses rarely.

What year and motor you have?..any CEL?..Could be a IMRC Not working, Not allowing your Secondaries to open up there for no power

sorry about that its a 98 e0 SVT the imrc has been disabled and modified to be open constantly. you can feel that it has power and then it drops and comes back. there is a CEL but i don't remember the codes. i know one of them was the cats are bad as all the o2 sensors are new

theoretically, it sounds good. as in u'd be getting access to the extra ponies that come when the IMRC opens much earlier. i dunno either tho. maybe someone will chime in. i'll do a quick search in the meantime.

You do that.. :)

To the Original poster:

You probably have a bad spark plug, wire, or both. Check plug gap/change the plugs and if that doesn't help then change the wires. (or.. do both at once, is what I would do)

yes senor ray :)! anyways, heres wot i found out. in the words of our fellow cegers...

if the secondaries don't open you will have a huge amount of power loss in rpms above 3500. if stuck open there is a noticable power loss below 3500 rpm and also may cause lean codes along with other problems.

so it sounds/feels like the car is cutting out until you get to high rpm? classic plug wire problem.

I'd replace the plugs and wires to make sure there isn't any problem with carbon tracking.

although it could possible be the secondaries staying open also. when they failed on my fathers 95 they stay open, the car bucked alot down low and didn't have much power but pulled great up top. as suggested fix the secondaries and replace the plugs and wires

The secondaries (on anything other than a 95, vacuum operated unit) are held CLOSED via springs on the LIM rod itself. (95's are vacuum operated and default to OPEN with no vacuum, and are PULLED closed as vacuum is created)

Your linkage should remain closed at all times (ie, the linkage/rod at the LIM should be relaxed and NOT pulled towards the firewall. Once you are above ~3750 (or ~3200 WOT ONLY) the linkage should be opened by a force on the cable pulling towards the firewall, and swiveling the linkage open. The first linkage should thus pull a second linkage (the other half/front half of the LIM) because it is attached by a copper connecting rod.

which exactly did u do? keep it open somehow or disable it (i.e make it inconsequential/ doesnt work at all) ?

I agree with BAD SVT on this one, it would be nice to know what was done to eliminate the secondaries/leave them open all of the time, simply ghetto rigging them to stay open isnt going to make the car faster, if anything you are loosing a hell of a lot of down low power in doing that. The only way eliminating secondaries would work on a stock motor is through a pretty extensive tune.

this had kind of been on ongoing problem since my first alternator has failed and i'm not sure but it could be that its the root of all my problems. i did do the wiring fix to the alternator to fix the flickering lights as i've had that problem. i'm on my third set of plugs and second set of wires since i've bought the car. also the only reason i disconnected the secondaries to leave them open was that one of them that is controlled by the linkage/rod. the bracket on it is broken off. it was something i found after a few months of the vehicle being purchased.

.edit.

maybe it is the point that i have them stuck open is throwing everything off. it just slowly progressed to this problem. wasn't a problem when i first modded the secondaries

well... see, disconnecting the secondaries is not exactly a mod. notice my earlier post? it makes the car run badly. the CEL will eventually come on if it isnt yet. fix the secondaries first before tackling anything else. u said u've gone thru a bunch of plugs n wires right? well, that means its not the problem. reconnect ur IMRC and go from there.

EDIT- one more thing. 93 is excellent but u dont have to use it. premium is 91. i just never used 93 cos most gas stations don't carry it out here.

btw thank you very much for your help. this is something that might take awhile to do as its not so simple to reconnect everything as i noted why i disconnected it in the first place. i'll try to take pics of the problem when i try to fix it
