Scraping noise when pulling away

Nothing major (yet) but something that worries me a little. Without fail, whenever I pull away in first gear I hear a kind of scraping noise that lasts for abotu a second and thats it. Doesn't affect how i accelerate, I am able to shift all the way through the gears. No performance issues.

Just an ominous scraping noise in first gear when pulling away fro ma standstill...

Anyone know if this is the beginning of a potential problem? If so, with what?

Oh and per my sig, I have a 2000 SVT, 95,000 miles.

What's was the weather on that day? And did you have your parking brake on? Sometimes, on cold nights (and days), the Parking brake (at the wheel end) will not release all the way when you let it down at the handle.

It happens every time I drive. Granted, its been pretty cold here in Wisconsin though.

I do always put my parking brake on when I get out of my car. Though the scraping will occur when I have been driving for a while and stop at a light or junction or what not and pull away.

Can you pinpoint which end or corner of the car this scraping is coming from? And is it a scraping sound like metal on metal or maybe more like a metallic rattle sound?

If the later, when is the last time you changed out the fluid in the MTX? I'll wager all you're hearing is that gear rattling or grinding type noise that sometimes happens when a person lugs the engine in too high of a gear. It also happens when taking off from a stop, especially if you don't give the engine enough rpms before engaging the clutch. Putting new approved fluid in there usually makes that sound go away.

Anyway, the answer to those first two questions will most likely determine whether or not I'm being any help.

Sounds kind of front leftish, but then my front left window is open to verify that.. :p

To me it sounds more like a metal on metal scrape. I only just bought the car a few weeks back so I don't know when the trans fluid was changed. I do have 3 quarts of the Motorcraft stuff, i just don't know how/where to change my fluid. I think i read somewhere that I need some kind of a pump..

I usually pull away at 1500 - 2k RPMs I think

Well that eliminates the emergency brake and the MTX is right in front of the driver so.....

That's the link to the how in the FAQ area. As to the when, if you do it now and the noise goes away, then you're all set. Plus you have the added value of being assured that you have an approved fluid in there. Since you already have the stuff, go ahead and do this and then report back to let us know if all is well or not. Oh, as to the where, does that mean you won't be doing your own oil changes? Because you could do the tranny where ever you do the oil/filter change on the engine.

Sorry, my "where" was in reference to where is the drain/fill plug. Found em now though ;)

Car is on ramps, just letting it cool down a little then i'm going to tackle the tranny fluid first then onto the oil and filter change, then my new sylvania silverstar bulbs THEN, i might be in the mood to change my front lower mesh...

I was having trouble getting my oil drain plug off... I think godzilla was the last being to work on this car and possibly wrenched the oil drain plug down to 1,000,000,000 ft lbs.

At least your plug is not ghetto rigged... I was under my car when I saw it, some idiot must have stripped the plug, so they took a regular nut and welded it to the plug :nonono:

Actually thats one of the things I found as a suggestion when a bolt is rounded. If it works, it works right?

I cant weld though so thats not something I would ever try.

that's the same noise my car was making and a few months later i'm stuck walking. If it's the noise i'm thinking, that's your clutch disc coming apart. but it could be something else.

Now you have me worried

Well, I guess ill go ahead with the trans fluid change when i can figure out how to remove my drain and fill plugs and see if that makes a difference... otherwise I wonder if a clutch replacement is in order..

don't let it worry you, but that's what noise my car was making and then the clutch went out. 145K i was kinda figuring it. could be just a small thing.

So I replaced the trans fluid, whatever came out was kind of reddish. Anyway, after a little drive around the block, I believe the noise is still there... maybe its quieter, maybe im wrong and it isnt there. Hard to tell since the roads were wet and splashing was causing a bit of noise. I guess ill see for certain tomorrow on my way to work. :(

On a positive note, I cant believe how easy this thing shifts now! Went straight into reverse and ran through the gears like butter. Again, maybe its just my crappy perception but thats another thing I will see on my way to work tomorrow.
