6.5krpm poping from exhaust???

Well I got sick of the previous exhaust the previous owner installed on my Csvt due to hitting the floor on every bump i went over.

I ran a nice chrome tip right out the rear drivers jack point. I had my car in the garage for quite some time since my hood flew up at 85mph on the hway and got smashed along with my windshield and roof. Well after a couple weeks finding a cheap windshield, black hood, and stud welding the roof im back on the road.

Now for the problem in detail:

I have NO CEL and been driving for 200+miles. It drives perfect with no problems EXCEPT at WOT I hear what sound like missfires/pops from 6450 rpm up. I can distincly hear it. I dont know if it has always done it, but with my exhaust exiting right by my door I hear it now.

I did new plugs, wires, and fuel filter right b4 I had my hood fly up (maybe 3k+ miles on them). I thought it may have been bad gas from sitting for a few weeks. SOO I hoped on the highway and ran it out. Filled up with sunoco 94octane (as usual) and headed home. It is still there... like I said you can hear it but BEARLY feel it. It is 12-14 degrees around here..

Sorry this is so long but I try to be detailed as possible to get this problem (if its even a problem) worked out. If it wasnt so cold I would take a vid of it.

thanks all!

Okay first tell me your exact exhaust components from the heads to the tail pipe.

EDIT----

Listen to this guys short exhaust.

Don't worry man if the exhaust is soo short there isn't enough room for the exhaust to resonate enough. Resulting in rasp/drone/popping.

Gutted pre-cats, Trubendz y-pipe, gutted main cat (pipe welded inside of it so exhaust gas doesnt have to expand on entrance and compress on the exit), 2 1/2 mandrel off cat to 2 3/4 exhaust tip out jack point.

I dont mind the poping after I let off (my procharged SVT shoots flames durring its pops :) Its just odd to hear it while im at WOT... Ive had quite a few spunky cars with exhausts and never had one do that.

Yeah see you have no cat no resonator. Thats your problem.

Well im new to duratecs.. and you got the rating to back ur advise up. It just seems odd to have poping at WOT. I had a bad ass 2dr datsun 510 with a ka24e w/ Individual Throttle Bodies and it would break up around 7k before I leaned it out up top, it sounded the same as the contour but gave a pretty bad jerking feeling to it.

The contour has the same sound but no feeling involved (ive counted like 2-5 pops almost everytime at 6.5krpm+ ...).

I have a 2.5" mbrp 18" resonator from my last svt focus exhaust b4 i went boosted and 3", I think ill be throwing it on the Csvt shortly.

A resonator will help your case. I know your trying to get the the maximum flow you can but if it's too much too add..... i would recommend a high flow 6inch cat. That will keep your car from popping for sure and cut back on rasp.

Oh post counts mean nothing:crazy: .

I just have tried every style of exhaust system and i still can't find one i am happy with:blackeye:

are you hitting the soft limiter? my old tach i think was a little off and at 6.5kwhich was actually like 6.7k it would pop and stop accelerating... limiter. but i agree with Harrry. just throwing out a suggestion

are you on or off the throttle when it pops?

I want to see how this side exit looks...

I've always wondered how exhaust would look coming out of the rear jackpoint cover.

I'm too lazy to search.

Its been done and posted with pictures before.
Some people even put holes on the side of our rear bumpers for the exhaust to exit:blackeye: :help: .

It might be a misfire. What type of plugs are you running? Double platinums are the only plugs that should be in that engine.

at "WOT" i get the pops. it keeps pullin hard to 7k. Im running base autolites and a NGK 8.8mm wire set (I use these kits on EVERY car I own and never had a problem)

i swear it sounds like a misfire/breakup. I had strait pipes to the back and never heard it. Its strange because it runs perfect otherwise and it just started this after sitting for a coulpe weeks in the garage. It pops at the same rpm every time.

on a side note... i LOVE the poping when im downshifting for a stop

The weather could also be adding to the popping. The cold does make rasps even worse:shrug:

I think everything else is fine. If you had problems from the spark plug end of this, your car would not be running at 100%. It will lag and spike at the top rpms. Which in your case doesn't seem to be happening.

So IMHO. get some recordings of this exhaust.

I think ill datalog with my xcal2 from my focus svt... see if I see any knock or miss' being logged. Exhaust vids commin soon..

fyi vids of my svt focus 3" exhaust are on youtube under "itbparada"

Grabbed some chevron injector cleaner and a tank of 94octain and pop is gone after half a tank!

problem gone for now i guess

Dirty injectors would have been my guess...but since you kinda already figured it out. Where do you live? I try not to run mine out when it's so cold, I'll take it out when it gets up to like 40 every once in awhile, but when it's as low as you said, it just scares me.

While you are at it, clean the UIM, throttle body, and LIM. And are the plugs the double plats?

I cleaned all of those when I first bought it 10k miles ago(along with optimizing TB). Plugs are normal autolites.. no platinum.

I am wondering if the plugs could the root of all this. These cars are famously known for not liking anything other than motocraft or autolight double plats.
