Have a buddy who has a 84 Mustang SVO. To all that don't know, it was basically the best handling Mustang up until the recent past, came with a 2.3 L Turbo 4 cylinder and a T5 5 speed trans. Made 185 hp for its day, and was a pretty quick car. My buddies has fallen onto some hard times, and we are trying to trace down a loss of power. It only happens occasionally, but when it does it feels as though the car has 0 power and doesn't want to accelerate. Other times it runs fine. It all started when the turbo blew up and dumped a bunch of oil into the motor. Spark plugs were pulled and cylinders 1 and 4 were pretty coated, 2 and 3 were ok. The problem persists. A new vane air meter (MAF) was installed to no avail. Tomorrow we are going to check wires, and see if his are still good. The owner before him installed an aftermarket MSD ignition box, which is the culprit in my opinion because it looks like it was installed by a drunk monkey. Now my question is, can we just completely bypass the ignition box? I've never installed or really worked with one before. Is it just an inline deal that boosts spark and is able to adjust timing? Or did it replace another ignition box? If it all possible we'd like to just take off the MSD box and see if it runs better without it. Thanks in advance for the help!
