i recently pulled my 98 gl onto the lift at work to see if there was anyway to get the steering rack out without dropping the sub-frame (there isn't). while it was in the garage i noticed the new transmission is bleeding heavily from the gasket. that means that the transmission specialist that replaced it either used the gasket with 100k miles on it or just didn't know how to put the new gasket in correctly. then i noticed that new hose clamps i put on were holding the radiator hoses on (they had been loosening themselves a lot in the last year) so i got excited and opened the hood, only to find that the coolant is now disappearing via some other method (aka head gasket). as soon as i found out all these bits of information i parked the car and replaced it, and my days with Ford are over. trouble is, i still feel bad about ditching my contour, even with the perpetual trouble and money it has cost me since getting it four years and 40k miles ago.
i can't imagine a car in this condition is worth much money to anyone, but it has alloy wheels, nice studded snow tires, a rust-free body and a nice interior. if anyone in the Vermont area wants some parts, let me know. otherwise i'll probably end up donating the poor thing.
i guess this is just what losing your first car feels like...
