I lost the key to my merc it’s a 98 ls. It’s been some time since I drove it last. I called ford and they say it’s a chipped key so I have to bring the car to them. I have a key to open the doors however will this key start the car? In addition, if I buy a blank is there any way I can program the key. I really don’t want to put this thing on a tailor and take it to ford. And get charged 150 bucks

is the key you have an original or a copy? if its original that it will start the car other wise the copy will not ...

if you have no original keys then the dealer has to "program" a new key ... since you have a 98 you only need one original key to program others yourself.

you have a V6 right?

yeah i have the V6 i got the car used. Its the only key i got with the car. and i think the only one thats starts it. Is there any way i can get the blank and program it ?

Call a locksmith in your area, Ask them if they can program a Ford Pats key dealio, SAVE MEGA BUCKS!! they sometimes have a pats programmer. try that option. But yeah, with our cars, I have seen the turn key over, wait 15 minutes for the led to blink then insert new key and bla blah blah but I dont think that works for our cars. I think tauruses ya but afaik, our late model PATS module doesnt work like that. I may be wrong.

to program keys yourself on the second sytle of PATs where you need two original keys check out the faq ..

but you use one original key and turn it to run, when the PATs led turn off remove key and turn second orginal key to run and wait for pats led to turn off, need to do this within a few seconds ... then turn the new key to run and wait for the pats led to turn off ... key is now programmed, repeat for other keys ...

this is what I did the other weekend ...

no I am not sure but I do believe that with the 98 that have the 1st gen pats you only need one original key and you do the same thing ...

Part way through the 98 production, PATS changed. The early 98 can be programmed with one already programmed key. The late 98 needs two alreay programmed keys to add another.

Actually, it isn't the key that gets programmed. It is the car that gets programmed to recognize the frequency of the transponder chip in the new key.

It's the electronic serial number of the RFID chip that has to be programmed into the PATS system. They all operate on the same frequency.
