How's it going. First time poster here. Owned by SVTC for a little over a month. Today while ****ing around I think I dropped a piston.

1. No CEL
2. Normal Idel
3. Very loud metal to metal sound. Kinda sounds like a rod.
4. Oil looks perfectly normal
5. No leaks

My roomate is a mastertech and he believes just from hearing it that it may be a dropped piston ring. We aren't really sure at this point because all his tools are at work. He is bringing them home tomorrow to try and help me out.

Anyone have any suggestions???

sounds like a rod bearing went. if a piston went it would be smashing itself all over the place, and the car would hardly move. a rod bearing would probalby be noticible, but not totally, because the cylinder would still fire.

Yeah, you could've spun a bearing... were you taking a long, hard, right hand high rpm turn when it started happening by any chance?!?!?

Welcome and sorry to hear.

"while ****ing around" .

Is this what you meant, "taking a long, hard, right hand high rpm turn ....!?!?"

Your oil level was probably low. Anything less than 0.5 quarts above max line is considered low for the Duratec.

I thought that too(oil level) until I spoke with one of the designers of the motor/car and he indicated that it was a myth. You would think that that would have been caught in R&D. Thoughts??-

ROTFL. That is probably the other side/site which do not subscribe to the "low" oil issue. Well, on this side/site, we subscribe to it. You found out the hard way. There are many design flaws (according to us regular folks) that we know Ford will not let out. The SHO enthusiast folks have a pending lawsuit with Ford for their SHO engine too.

So my advice is this, when on this side/site, listen to the advice here. When on the other side/site, listen to the advice there. When it is contradictory, listen to what you think is right. If it is wrong, you will know real soon. I would rather have a leaky oil pan gasket than a toasted engine. ;) .

Incidentally, I don't have a leaking oil pan gasket. And I have been going with 0.5 quart (or 6 quarts total) above max line for the 1996 Duratec ever since I joined this site (June 2005).

It is not a myth that there is inadequate oil drainback holes in the 2.5 heads. It can be readily seen with the cam covers (valve covers) off. It was first reported here after Rousch discovered the problem during testing.

It is not a myth that the rod bearings are tender. It doesn't take much of an oil supply glitch to damage a bearing.

If someone at Ford thinks it is a myth they have their head in the sand.

When I say I was "****ing around" I mean I was (edited) through the hills by my house. I had my friend in the car who is interested in purchasing a SVTC and wanted to see what it could do, so I showed him.

I only run 91 in it. I just had the oil changed with 5w30 Mobile 1 syn. When I recieved the car back from the shop, I added another half quart. Previous owner ran 5w30 and 10w30. It switched back and forth (I have all the service records...ALL of them.)

I'm lead to believe is a rod bearing apposed to a dropped skirt.

I am sure this could be similar to a extended sweeping right hand turn.

"I just had the oil changed with 5w30 Mobile 1 syn. When I recieved the car back from the shop, I added another half quart."

Unfortunately, this statement can mean anything from you had 6.3 quarts to you had 5.5 quarts (maybe less) in the car.

A CEGer once posted that his mechanic had been putting only 5 quarts for him in his car. He only questioned what amount they were putting for him after seeing his oil light come on. Yes, he ended with a 3L too.

This is a road race.

What you were doing is called "asshattery". It isn't allowed discussion material here, so don't mention it again.

There is a very easy way to be sure what happened to your engine. Just take off the Oil pan and look for anything that look like metal. If you find something like metal scrap... consider say goodbye to a lot of money and say "hello!" to a 3L.

I guess that you can fix the bearings but... it will happen again. Believe me, LOL.

(edited by Tony2005. No, he wasn't. He was doing something illegal and I edited the posts. The rules of this forum are very clear. Blkdvll was doing something illegal and posting about it. It is not acceptable and I sent him a friendly PM reminder/warning. Auto-X Fil was just being very diplomatic about it. I would not have being as diplomatic. I will post the forum rule for you.

Driving spiritedly on back roads the last time I checked is not street racing. WTF?

If your piston rings are toast, it is likely you would see smoke coming out of the tail pipe as you would most certainly scar the crap outa one of more of your cylinders.

A compression/leakdown test should confirm whether or not you have a damaged ring.
