Ok i know this is a contour forum but my roommate at school ask me to look at his car. It is a 97 Rav4 with 91k 4 cylinder 5 seed. If you crank over the engine it just dies as soon as you stop cranking. If you give it gas while cranking it will rev up and stay running till you let off the gas.

Things i checked:
No check engine light
Looked like all vacuum lines were connected
When running smelled exhaust (did not smell super rich)
New O2 sensor in December

Things i plan to check:
Plugs
Wires

Does anyone else have any suggestions? Thanks for your time.

Idle Air Control IAC valve. Not sure what the Toyota equivalent term is.

Edit. Here is a quote from the toyotanation forum regarding the RAV4 (don't ask).

"1. That this idler control valve is somewhat pandemic, at least on certain series / models / years. Here is a quote from something I read last noght:

"Take the case of Jerry Andersen, who has also gone through four idle air control valves on his Camry. He has replaced the valve at 25,000 miles, 38,000 miles and 47,000. So it seems that the problem is getting worse as the car ages.

"The Toyota factory refuses to comment on the problem directly," Andersen said. "The dealership offers no explanation other than saying that this is a problem."

I don't know if the 99 Camry a 98 RAV have the same ICA part number / generation, but the whole article is pretty blunt about how there is a known issue and Toyota seemingly is turning a deaf ear to it."

I will check that, I registered for toyotanation and search there before posting here. But I did not find any good info. Thanks for your help.

I just got back from trying to get the car in the garage; it was parked on the street. We got tired of pushing so I gave it gas and kept it in first and by the time I got to the garage the idle was stuck at 2100 RPM. Then backed it in tot he garage and the idle started to get back down to 1000 RPM. So as of now it seems to be working.

I think there might be something wrong with the ICV like Tony said. Thanks for the help Tony
