3M Carbon Fiber Vinyl (clear coat)??

So I was thinking about doing a couple parts and possibly the hood with that new 3M carbon fiber vinyl wrap. My question is tho...see how it looks very real but not glossy. Real carbon fiber is glossy. How well would it work if I wrapped the hood with this vinyl and then had it professionally sprayed with clear coat? Would it give the same affect that real carbon fiber gives?

This sounds like a really dumb idea.Carbon fiber vinyl stickers sounds ricey...making it stupid.

spraying clear coat on top of vinyl makes it a really stupid idea.

Well if you haven't noticed..you can't buy hoods for these cars anymore. So you have to find alternatives there dude!
 
Is this just rice evolving? First it starts with putting stickers on your car for crap you don't have or is for aesthetics only. Now its wrapping fake vinyl carbon fiber around parts?? WTF is the point???

This stuff is vinyl, so I can't imagine clear coat working too well with it. I've seen people clear coat stuff similar to this and it turned out horrible. Had epic orange peel that no amount of sanding would fix.
 
Contrary to popular belief, carbon fiber is NOT glossy. When it comes out of the autoclave it has a matt look to it. Believe me, after working on many, many race cars with carbon tubs and as a lead aircraft mechanic, I've seen and worked with plenty of carbon fiber.............

Very good point. Carbon fiber is only glossy when its sealed/painted. Otherwise its dusty and kinda rough (which might actually appeal to the VW guys).

As mentioned, group buy is going on. Also there is the classifieds and the guy who makes the group buy hoods can still do a one off Vader hood if you are willing to pay. He's got an ebay ad up right now.

Vinyl carbon fiber just sounds like epic fail and clearcoating over it is just silly.

but what do us pre 98 guys do? i'd really love to have a cowl CF hood for my mystique. I think it'd look mean as hell.
 
I say try it and see who it works. :laugh:

But if it works, you have to promise you will then wrap the entire Contour in vinyl Carbon and get it clear coated.

It would be the closest to real we would ever see for an entire "Carbon Fiber" Contour! :cool:

Honestly if I had a pre-98 I'd go find some 98+ fenders, bumper, hood and headlight mounting panel (whatever it is called). Or if not then find a body shop that'll mold a fiberglass cowl into the stock hood?
 
See, i like the look of the Pre 98 Mystique's, so your second option would be more likely. I have though about swapping fenders, and headlights so i could put an SVT kit on, but i'd rather leave the Mystique front on the car, custome mold the SVT kit to fit and do some sort of custom hood. ha, just cuz i like the front styling lol

another think i could do is get a CF cowl hood from another contour that might be damaged or something and cut it up and mold it to fit...
 
I've seen some pretty badass molded stock hoods. Any good shop should be able to put a nice cowl in the stocker. It does suck how limited the pre-98s are though. Blu Fuz's looks sick with the stock hood and the molded bumper though. I'd go that route.

Yes, if you use the wrong clear and lay it on heavy right off the bat. It eat right through it and cause the problems someone previously mentioned.

Where are you getting the idea you cant get the hoods anymore? Have you been on ebay lately man?
