Guys, I'm in need of some help;

My car is a 99, ATX.

Attempting to clean my car a little more thoroughly, I decided I'd remove the center console and clean under there.

Well, I used the Center Console Removal pdf file that I found here (that was for a manual, btw) and I got to the point where you are taking the "knob" off of the auto shifter.... I unscrewed the one screw there and started pulling up, and it came off. But, once it was off I noticed that there was a wire coming from under the shifter, appeared that it had been ripped out of from inside of the shifter. That's when I realized it was the wire going to the over drive button on the shifter.

Now, I believe I may be screwed because I am trying to figure out how am i going to re attach that wire to the over drive switch?

I hope this makes sense, I could really use some help on how to get my o/d switch back up and running.
Also, how was I supposed to take that thing off without the o/d wire getting in the way anyway?

THANK YOU!!

Okay so now I just need to know if there would be a way of reattaching the wires? Seems like it is impossible... My question then would be, how much trouble could I potentially run into by not having those wires attached; aside from the fact that i won't have an o/d option.

Not sure what happened unless you post a picture but if the wires are torn out of the OD off button, you probably need a new button from the junk yard. If the wires were just broken, then use some wire connectors and you should be good to go.

The Wires are torn from the O/D switch which is impossible to get to since it is way up in the shifter tube. Or Atleast I couldn't figure out a way to get to it.

I spliced the wires together and just let them be for now; Seems like I wont have the option to turn o/d off for now. No big deal i guess.

You can pull the O/D button out of the shifter handle and run new wires down inside the handle. Just pry around the switch and you can pull it out. Just make sure the new wires are the same gauge as there is not a lot of room inside the handle. Also, when running the new wires, there is a little track to keep the wires in so they don't get chewed up by the rest of the shifter.

Alternatively you can go to the junk yard and remove a handle and cut the wires closer to the harness and splice into your harness.

without looking at a wiring diagram, the switch is either an open or closed switch, with the wires tron away the o/d will either be on or off. with them torn and the light is off, then let it be. if the light is on and the o/d is off at this time, then connect the wires on that wiring harness side and it should go off. there are only two wires unless 2000 is different than 95's. any other feedback out there, does this sound correct?

Tie into the wires under the car and run them to a switch mounted below the dash or in the glovebox. It's not like you need the switch often.

(then you can tell people the shifter button is for the ejection seat :)

I was watching an old "Mythbusters" last night they were doing the ejection seat deal. But they flipped the gear shift for that. :)

I sencond this idea.
Go to radio-smack and buy some wire, a simple 2 position switch, and some butt-connectors.

Run the wire to wherever you want the switch to be. Use the butt-connectors to connect to the original wires.

Attach the switch to the wires and found a decent spot for it.

There ya go... ...
