ok hopefully someone will chime in here got a very complicated problem but it has to be an easy solution. my car never wants to rev past about 5.5-6k rpm. when it gets into that range acceleration stops and it begins backfireing terribly it has no trouble getting to that range though anyone have any clue what could be happening?

you need to provide more information like miles, maintenance history, etc first ...
+1.

There could be many reasons. In addition, more description of when it started happening, what weather conditions, gas used, etc. would help. Another item could be fuel pump.

It sounds like the fuel pump, could be a clogged fuel filter too, does it have any dead spots in the throttle like does it cut out at any other rpm, does it spit and sputter when you floor it standing still?

Here lately I have had the same problem on my 98 CSVT. Only mine does it now and then and cuts out around 6K. Especially in 2nd gear is when I am having the problem. But in my case there is no backfiring. It is like the engine just stops pulling there. It was almost as if I had pressed the clutch in. The eng continued to rev but there was no pull. This has occured 3-4 times recently and is always during cold weather....around freezing....and yes the engine is warm when it happens.

The engine has 82xxx miles on it and the only mod that I have done was that I put a 4" maf adapter and kn-2590 filter on it recently. I service the engine on a regular basis changing the fluids and doing the routine things.

Also there has been times when I didn't feel my secondaries open like I have before. And I normally only feel them in 2nd and 3rd gear....very little in 1st and nothing in 4th or 5th. Is normal or a bad thing. And what can we do to fix this problem.

svttouruofl that is about the same as mine. sorry not enough info wanted to be short and sweet. i have 127K on the car replaced the fuel filter about 15k ago have replaced the IMRC about 5 times now (junk yard specials) found a new location under the battery that takes care of the heat problem. plugs and wires only have 30K on them bosche platnum 4s and 8mm replacement wires. and like svttouruofl said it usually is over 6K but when bad can be as low as 5.5K when the engine starts sputtering and backfiring. also have res replaced and twin gutted flowmaster 40s in the back(dont ask they gutted themselves??) just replaced the air filter and it helped a little. had a K&N drop in airfilter but was not impressed at all. (not worth the money!) what is happening is fairly consistant but will randomly stop and work just fine(usually in first gear only) i run 87 octane and just had the injectors and cylinders cleaned(buddy hooked me up at jiffy lube) and that helped a little but is still bad above 6K no power whatsoever. hope thats enough if anything else will help please ask

Does yours do it all the time or is it just occasionally? I haven't had the problem for at least a week but who knows. And I normally run 87 but I have been putting 93 in it lately to see if it would help while gas prices were down.

There's your smoking gun.

That alone would cause those kinds of problems? ...?
Maybe. Your SVT is supposed to run 91, not 87.

..What about the other guy that is having the backfiring and stuff?
He doesn't have an SVT. So he can run 87. As for his issues, I would suspect SP gap out of specs. Need to regap them to 0.054 (for V6). In addition, I would also look into getting a new transistor for the junk yard special IMRC. In addition, it could be the fuel pump too.

havent had any trouble with the bosche 4s they come pregapped and have been in for about 30K or so havent had a prob till about Oct. of 06' when this all started just now getting around to fixing it. but...changing plugs and wires again has crossed my mind. id put in 9mm wires if i do so. but im trying to pay off some speeding tickets...grrr i swear theyre out to get me

ROTFL again and again. On this site, pre-gapped = wrong gap. In addition, a CEGer had previously posted of the SP gaps in this Contour going out of specs within a few months of gapping and installing them. Humor me by checking out the SP gaps. Then make sure you reinstall the SP wires in the correct order.

Edit. Make sure spark wires are in this order. Note the 4-6-5 for the coil pack. SP gap should be 0.054 inch.

ill need to change the SPs then they are the 4s (with four "arms" if you will) can those be gapped?

trust me theyre in the right order.
