My 98 SVT engine makes a ticking sound at idle only when the engine is 200 degrees. And its ••••ing loud. When it is cold as ambient temperature 80 degrees, it sounds like a brand new engine. Only ticks when hot. From 2000 rpm to 7000 rpm you can not hear the ticking. Engine sounds mint and makes loads of power. Engine does not smoke at all.

Here is what it ISN'T:

Spark plugs
Rod bearings
Timing chains
Timing chain tensioners
Timing chain tensioner arms
Timing chain guides
Harmonic balancer
Hydraulic lash adjusters (replaced all 24)
Exhaust manifold gaskets (replaced both banks and manifolds are not cracked)

I replaced all of the above and it still makes the same exact noise.

The sound is DEFINITELY coming from the front bank, bank 2, and is coming from cylinder number 4. Its not the rod bearing.

Someone said wrist/piston pin? How can this happen? Because the dip•••• I bought it off of redlined the piss out of it? Because it's a ••••ty FORD? Why is only one making noise? Why does ford build heaping piles of garbage? I WILL take this car apart and smash every last piece with a sledgehammer.

Engine is already in the scrap yard along with the pile of •••• ford. I've had it with ford, HAD IT! They are all junk, every last one of them. I will never own another and neither will any of my friends or customers. JUNK. Contour SVT what a pitiful excuse for a sports car. JUNK. And if anyone wants the body pieces I want $3000 or they will stay hoarded by me or I will melt that •••• into a pile of plastic. •••• FORD

im sorry...you say ford is sh*t but selling for $3000? sh*t is worth almost nothing so il take it for that:laugh:

btw...ur freaking out because of a stupid tick which could be detonation...A STUPID TICK...a tick?!?!

and your freaking out?!?!

well im sorry but if your not willing to at least put premium fuel, and only freak out while people are trying to help, well thats just ••••ed up and i cant imagine when you "dream car" starts to tick what ur gonna do

people are trying to help so why dont u ••••ing trying something and stop ••••ing complaining, it sounds like ur a ••••ing 14 year old girl

^^^ i agree,
this guy is freakin out....he can't help it! give him some credit guys... i have learned alot since i have owned my first svt in 2003! BUT i will not agree with him bashing a FORD! NO WAY! Ford makes the best built American Vehicles hands down!

BRoken Bolts- you should be glad you even own an SVT contour because of how rare they are... calm down, and ask questions before you flip out and people will LOVE to help you out! :)

Or if all else fails with the 2.5 and the ticking wont go away drive it till it goes and prep up that 3.0 and build you a monster lol...thats what im going to do when my 2.5 flops

All that talk about rod bearings and no mention of crank condition. If crank worn change all the bearings on the planet and no cure. Someone should consider changing brain instead of brand of car.

Cars are cars, there are really none better than others nowadays. ALL brands have a clunker or two as well as excellent ones.

Take a 3/4" or 7/8" heater hose that is about 3 feet long and use it like a stethoscope to hunt down the noise if you haven't done this already. The heater hose stethoscope technique often works better than the screwdriver stethoscope method for isolating engine compartment noises.

I'm pretty sure that no Ford wants to be owned by you either! I guess that 14 year old rice burners don't break. How many miles on the $3000 pos? Poor car never had a chance. LOL:fiddle:

The ticking sound on my 95 turned our to be an exhaust manifold leak. Would come and go with the temp of the engine.

I would put money on this being his problem...my 98 did the same thing. When I pulled the motor in it to do a 3L I found out it was an exhaust leak at the manifold.
