ok, so after all the troubles I had with the dealerships in finding a car, finally found a real decent 98 ford taurus SE. 4 door, 3L - V6 (vulcan) Thing is I cant get into the Taurus Club website (down for Updates or something) Im just curious about the Vulcan engine, since Ive only mostly heard of the Zetec and Duratec. Is it a reliable engine? Can someone dredge up some info or a link to something usueful? All I can find is ads and what not and a small blurb about it on Wikipedia.

I had 2 issues that I was hoping to get resolved on the Taurus Club site and that was
1: if the factory head unit can support a cd changer (has the "CD" button and disc change button on the instrumentation)
2: Engine is hesitating now and again, likely needs the fuel filter or plug changed, but wanted to see if there are any bigger problems this could be related too.

Thanks for any info anyone can find, and ill thank Tony in advance since he always seems to have answers.

Tougher than the Duratec. Will run forever if maintained. Slower than molasses in January though.

1) supports a CD changer, but an aftermarket one probably wont work with the headunit, I would try to find a junkyard taurus with a changer and work from there.

2) Fuel filter, Spark plug wires, splark plus... Basically a tune up probably will help any hesitations

The Vulcan is a more reliable engine then the duratec. Although both are excellent engines, I probably would count on a vulcan before a duratec on terms of mileage. Power on the other hand... duratec FTW!

Yes, if it has the CD button and features, you can add a CD Changer in the trunk, there is an adapter you need that plugs into a nice silver box in your trunk on the left hand side. I have yet to do this to my car, but one day I intend on getting a CD changer, right now the car is in Winter Storage, and I am driving a 1994 Ford Escort

hey kev, 2 questions. Will any aftermarket cd changer pack work or is what you are saying with the adapter you can use whatever you wish? Second, when the engine is turned off, it makes this long winding down noise. Is it something to do with the sequential fuel injection? Just never heard an engine make that noise.

Almost any aftermarket CD Changer will work. They just require a special adapter...
These are specific according to Crutchfield

I have seen units that have their own harness, then a harness that plugs into the factory plug.

Might wanna research on that a bit more since I haven't done much of it. I would be checking taurusclub.com right now, but appearently the site is offline for upgrades :(

As for the winding down noise? I think I know what you are talking about... It's from turning all that power off, all that power is taken away. :p

I think it might be related to the cooling fans... Because I have noticed a winding down noise when I seemed to have used my A/C, but when I move my car in the driveway, and then turn it off, just turns right off with no extra noise. I always joked around that it was from the very powerful motor just not wanting to turn off quite yet :)
