My timing belt is flapping around, not too much but enough to be making noise. Do I need a new tensioner? is there a way to test out the tensioner to make sure I need one?

Is this a ford only part?

i think i tightened it up but now the belt in running right on the edge of the timing pulleys not in the center...what would cause this

Too much tension might cause that. If it just right on the edge I would back it off a little bit and see what it does. If it isn't rubbing on anything though, it should be ok.

I don't know how to describe it. Not loose that it bounces all over the place, but not tight enough where it pulls to the edge. You'll know where the comfort zone is when you find it. If it doesn't rub on the cover, you could just try it there though. When I replaced mine, no matter how much we adjusted the tensioner (replaced all pulleys/tensioner with belt) it still rode towards the outside edge. It didn't rub on anything, so I left it.

The tensioner has marks on it that need lined up. Cam sprockets need to be loose when setting tension.

how important is the tensioner spring??? Is this a ford only part? how much for the spring?
