After many tries installing my left axel shaft, hitting my hand several times with a hammer, I finally listened to the guys at the transmission shop and installed a new circlip and it popped right in. It appears that the circlip gets burrs on it and this prevents an easy installation or removal.

The axle circlip should be replaced ANY time the axle is removed. Not replacing the circlip can cause serious damage to the diff. if the axle is not seated properly.
