Won't Crank

Hello, so I have a 99 SVT Contour 2.5 Liter engine in it and I can't get it to crank over. I have checked the battery, he relays and fuses, even changed the starter and still nothing. I am open to any ideas and suggestions.
Thanks, Trace

I have tried to pop start it and no luck there. I have done so multiple times and at a decent speed in different gears all no luck.....

Did the engine turn over when you did that and just not start?

So it won't turn over even with a new starter and a good battery. I would say to check the battery cables and make sure they are in good shape with no corrosion. But it wouldn't start by popping the clutch. If you have a multimeter check the resistance of your battery cables. Also check your mega fuse. It is located just under the ignition coil pack. The battery positive cable starts at the battery then to the starter then to the mega fuse and ends at the alternator. Its possible that the motor is getting no electricity for spark. But i doubt that is the case.

the engine turned over but didn't start. I had the key on, and i could hear the fuel pump work. Possible clutch switch?

Clutch switch won't matter for pop starting. If you think that's faulty, its right above the clutch pedal. Remove the connector and jump the terminals with a wire. But mind you if that's the problem the car still start in gear! So be sure your in neutral.

seems to be part of the problem now if i jump it cranks over just fine. Although I couldn't get it to start it would turn over but not start. I am going to check for spark and recheck the fuses but beyond that i may need some advice

Alright so i've found why it won't start and its because of the PATS system. It has detected something that it doesn't like and won't allow it to start. Is there anyway to tell what it has detected?

Are you sure it's the PATS? I swapped my PCM with an SVT one I picked up, came with a key but my lock cylinder obviously doesn't accept that key, and the PCM won't accept my original key so I have to cover the original key's transponder with aluminum foil and hold the other key to the lock cylinder to start it. If I just use my key and turn it it doesn't crank, all it does is flash the pats light rapidly.

Basically, if the PATS key isn't right or it's not finding the signal it WILL NOT crank. I'd check the crank sensor, with a small 7mm (IIRC) wrench it's really easy to reach from the pass. wheel well with the splash guard off.

i think it could be one of the sensors i ordered a new cam and crank sensor so i will try those next....as far as the PATS goes the code its flashing is 1 min solid light then a 2 to 1 blinking ratio. This ratio i have found means that there is 3 or less keys programmed for the car which is true....so now i don't think its the PATS system letting it start but maybe one of the sensors. I replaced the clutch switch as well and maybe that is out of place a little bit ill have to find more information about adjusting it. Any ideas would be great!

Yeah I'd put my money on the crank sensor, without the right PATS key the fuel pump won't even prime and you said you could hear it.

Its not the cam or crank sensor. I replaced them both. I pugged in a code reader and p0704 comes up which is reading clutch switch circuit input, ive replaced the clutch switch still no start not even cranking over. Is there a difference between clutch switch, and clutch switch circuit input?

Finally gave it to the ford garage after ashuring myself i couldn't do anymore, and they determined it was the PCM/ECM so i need a new one of those anyone have a spare one?

Post the code off your pcm please so people can match it. It will be a four digit code on the side or bottom of your current pcm. Example some use sfgo .

No that looks like the serial number, what you're looking for is a sticker with 3 letters and a number, should be on the connector IIRC, PCM FAQ has a decent list of what codes are for what. If you car has a return style fuel rail you can use only a 98.5 SVT or an early 99 SVT PCM. My car is a non-SVT early 99 with return style rail and when I upgraded I got an SFG2 so I'd stick to that one or the later 98.5 SVT's SFG0. Though keep in mind it doesn't look like anyone had ever posted what a later 99 SVT with returnless was, and it all depends on what your fuel rail is, but if your car is returnless you can use one from a 2000 SVT as well.

EDIT: For clarity you can't use an early 98 PCM because they had an external PATS module while the 98.5 and up had an internal one.
