I would say CONSTANTLY driving near or at redline. I'd say anything above 4k RKM is not needed for normal driving, of course you can take it over that for some fun from time to time. The powerband is from 4k to redline

Obviously the more you push the car to it's limits the more likely it is to break down on you.

So I guess beating on the car would be taking off from every light like you're racing someone, banging gears, etc. Of course you've gotta keep up on maintenance. Always check your oil and make sure everything is in good condition under the hood. If you keep on top of all basica maintenance issues you shouldn't have any problems. I'm not saying you should drive the car like an old woman, though that is one way to make the engine last forever. I admit to putting lots of hard miles on my car, but when it's all said and done I do my best to make sure everythings working as it should be. That's why so far, it's still running well. Alot of things can be considered beating on a car, most of it should come to you usign common sense and being reasonable with the car.

Ha ha, he he We always called them "callibrated forcing tools"

But I think he's serious

Look Jlb19:
Break the new motor in easy - by the book
Change the oil every 3000 miles
Never rev the engine over 4500 unless the temperature is up to normal
    Never go over redline
Never let it knock and ping
Never drive it if it's running bad - fix it
    Get the DMD
Get the baffled oil pan - or better yet, a remote oil reservoir

You get the picture?

Oil starvation kills engines
Dirty oil wears out engines
Driving hard with cold oil wears out engines

And NEVER let the engine overheat!!

Drive easy till it warms up.
Keep up on scheduled maintenance.
Don't bother with "engine braking." Use your brakes and save your clutch.
Smooth shifts.
Synthetic lubricants. High quality filtration.

Ummmmm....

What they said.

would you rather wear out your engine and tranny, or your brake pads?

Right. I did this too, until pretty recently.

Basic thing is which friction material do you want to replace? Clutch or brake pads? Your pads on a modern car are more than capable of stopping you.

OH yeah, and avoid those 2nd gear starts, too.
