Actually... Ford Five-Hundred replaced the Taurus... Ford Focus replaced the Escort, Ford Fusion is replacing the Contour. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_ContourWhen test driving the Fusion, it was smaller than my Taurus. Ford Five Hundred seems to fit the glove correctly considering Ford Taurus never had a I4 Engine, The Fusion does. Ford Five Hundred has a V6 in there. So I'd say the Fusion is more for the Contours that have been neglected for so long...

The Fusion is larger than the old Ford Contour, which never really took off because it wasn't really suited for the U.S. market. But the Fusion is smaller than the once-top-selling midsize Ford Taurus, which the Fusion completely replaces in 2006.
linky.
And again: Quote:
While the Taurus still lingers in the Ford lineup, something for the fleets that insist on low, low prices, the Fusion is the logical replacement for that tired old workhorse.
linky

No sir. The taurus DID have a four cylinder. It had the High Swirl version of the famous 2.3L from in the Mustang. Just thought you'd like to know that.

The Taurus 4 cylinder was only in production for two years. It was a 2.5 litre version of the Tempo/Topax 2.3 litre engine. It had no resemblance to anything that was ever use in the Mustang. It was an overhead valve (cam in block) design. Except for the swirl combustion chambers it most resembled a 4 cylinder version of the old 302 V8. The Taurus 4 cylinder was very often coupled with a manual transmission, and was the only manual trans Taurus until the SHO was introduced.
On a side note, I have found that Wikipedia isn't terrably accurate.
The Fusion platform is only slightly larger than the Contour and on that basis I would say that it is a Contour replacement. However it seems that Ford would rather forget the Contour for whatever reason and tends to show both the Fusion and the 500 as Taurus replacements.

I've been renting cars for the past month due to Winter and the CSVT w/o an engine and I have a 2006 Taurus sitting in my driveway.. Budget unloaded the car before my eyes and it had 5miles on it.. when are they stopping production? I thought 2005 models were the end of it..? regardless the car hauls ass... I hate to say it but I'm starting to love it.. If the Fusion has the same engine and later gets a MTX w/SVT package I might be sold.

I don't know which engine your rental car has, but the 3.0 DOHC Taurus engine is nearly the same as the Fusion engine except that the Fusion will have variable valve timeing giving it about 20 more horsepower.
An article I saw in Autonews just today (email version) said that the Taurus was going out of production at the end of the 2006 model year. Perhaps that is only for one plant though and perhaps the article wasn't specific about the entire Taurus line.
Many may think that the Escort 4 door was finished in the 1999 model year, but I saw a few with 2002 VINs that were bought as used cars from auction when they completed their stint as rental cars. Perhaps they are doing the same with the Taurus so that they don't dilute the value of the 500 and Fusion by dumping too many into rental service.
