Yea, 1833 was a long time ago. There's still descrimination, but at least we've taken steps forward.

Slavery in America was a cake walk compared to slavery in Haiti, the rest of the caribean, and south America. Most slaves in those regions were worked to death(literally; most died before reaching 20) and treated with abject cruelty.

I don't condone or even make excuses for the treatment of fellow human beings like so much chattle, but if you really want to find shameful american history just google "trail of tears".

Just think, from the time slavery was banned in 1865 by the 13th amendment, it only took 31 more years for the Supreme Court to render their decison in Plessy vs. Ferguson. In this case, the Supreme Court upheld a segregation law as constitutional. Cheif Justice Taney wrote the opinion of the Court in which he stated something like, "Negroes are not an equal race to Whites, and therefore the court can not require a state to provide equal facilities."

It only took the Supreme Court 58 more years to reverse that bigoted ruling in the 1954 case of Brown vs. Board of Education. This case was a combining of a series of cases that the Court was to hear on segregation in public schools.
From this case we get the now famous line, "We conclude that in the field of public education the doctrine of ââ?¬Ë?separate but equalââ?¬â?¢ has no place. Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal"

This effectively ended legalized segregation in the U.S.

Pretty sad that it took 89 years after slavery was abolished to end LEGAL segregation, and we still haven't eliminated de facto segregation everywhere in the year 2006.

Well, I'm not trying to compare atrocities.

With that said. It's wild to me is that we Americans are so quick to judge and point fingers at other countries histories (The Holocaust), but we conveniently "forget" our own stink.

I dont really think anyone is gonna forget, but its natrual to point fingers because it brings up negative feelings and no one wants to dwell on such things that we as Americans once had partaken in. It makes me feel bad that my fellow Americans today do ignorant and stupid things, and while I will never forget, I like to look ahead to the future and hope things will only improve, and sometime my children will live in a world with less racial tention and the like.

My half sister (who is white, btw) was joking with a friend in Charlston saying that... She said that some people overheard her and was looking at her like "are you serious???"

Heh... would have been pretty funny to see.
