The real reason for the odor is from sulpher in the fuel, something that Californian's have mostly forgotton about since our fuel is b etter controlled to meet low sulpher regulations. Sulpher smell is agrivated by running rich and can also be agrivated by spirited driving.
Before jumping to other conclusions about shat is wrong with your car, try some other brands of fuel. Perhaps other brands in your area are lower in sulpher.
