The remaining point is. In a ztec final gear redline is 240.5 kph. The duratec with a smaller final gear is around the same. This is equal to 140 some mph. Therefore 150+ mph is what 7000rpm would net you. Maybe realest, you mistook 7000rpm for 6000rpm?

Just be careful if you do. What is the speed rating on your tires?

IMHO, once you start going over 110, it's as important to work on the aero package as it is HP. With minor mods to the engine, and a very prototype(read: broke after use) underbody tray I have seen 153. Clocked on radar by SCHP, a friend of mine. I have looked into vortex generators that would adhere on the sunroof to help the airflow stay attached to the car, therefore decreasing drag. Put some water drops on the rear window, get up to around 50 and tilt the sunroof... you'll see the water in the center of the rear window begin to blow down, a sign of better attached airflow. It's a theory, might try it out.

It is very possible that he was seeing 7K rpm fourth gear in the automatic if you consider the slippage that the automatic transmission has in the torque converter. If he was running into stiff wind resistance he could experience more slippage in the converter. Think of it as power-braking, the effect you get when you hold your foot on the break and push on the gas with an ATX. It will slip up to a certain rpm and assuming nothing breaks it will continue to slip until the hp=slippage. At idle when you power brake the engine will only go up to something like 2500 rpm or so, that is partly because there is not enough power at that rpm to accelerate the motor faster against the drag of the converter. Now picture him already around 4-5K rpm in top gear (130mph or so?) where the engine has maximum torque...the engine can then accelerate a little more while the converter begins to slip more and the car ends up not going any faster because of wind resistance. Even though the tach is showing higher engine speeds. I know its a long explanation.. warmonger

I got mine up to 117 with no problem. However, I borrowed a friends aftermarket speedo to use during my run, and thats what showed 117. The stock speedo stopped at 110.

Well I guess that blows that idea. Assuming your clutch wasn't slipping then you were going real fast. Sounds like the 130's range...and you definitely are not goverened then. warmonger

My speedo said 115 mph... @ WOT for quite some time, it quickly got to 100, then kinda levelled off and worked its way up to 115 where it stopped accelerating. I never hit a fuel cut off. No violent shut down of any sort. It just ... stopped ... accelerating. Hmmm... I just looked under the Contour for the first time in ... oh, months.. (was letting my sister use it - VR4 kept me busy)... Are there THREE cats and TWO mufflers on this?? Holy crap... I'm going to go out on a limb here, and assume its a safe bet that if I gutted these cats and elimated the mufflers (or at least one of them for Christ sake..)... Id see a nice improvement in top end pull...How much would a complete custom exhaust probably run me? I donno if I want to put a lot of money into this car, but something simple like exhaust doesnt seem like it could hurt Now, @ WOT in my VR4 ... haha... I've hit 140 in that, and I was too scared to go faster.. I've always pussed out when I got to that speed...

Yea thats what I was guessing, the 130 range. Yeah you wouldnt believe my shock when I noticed I had past my usual goverened speed. I didnt believe it at first, but you know when you're going much faster then you are use to.
