If you have a pre98 I say beat that sh!t to hell. The pre98's where built way better than the post98's. This is comming from me currently owning a SVT (37k miles) and a 96 LX auto (87k miles).
The only problem I've had with the 96 is the water pump failure. The SVT? Well, let's just say the SVT couldn't handle the abuse I give to my 96. The SVT just plain wasn't built as "FORD TOUGH" (hehe) as my 96.
On the SVT the tranny went @ 29k (clutch, master, slave, fly etc), syncos, cvboot leak, leaks in my intake manifolds... but after all that she's purrin' like a kitten. I admit I drove it like crap when I got it first adopted her and that's why I had tranny problems (first manual I ever had, I learned on it..hell my friend drove it home for me since I didn't know how the hell to drive it)

Dude, there's no "speed" you shouldn't go over, but driving for an extended period of time at 90mph with the O/D off (should have put you somewhere about 5000 RKM) probably isn't a very good idea. For all intensive purposes, you shouldn't turn off the o/d when you're on the highway.

Don't worry about the speed. It's how you take care of your engine(ie: DMD, sythetic oil changed regularly). I mean I've seen you posting alot around here, and if you read up a little you will see that the Duratecs are designed shitty, and you have to add a little bit to make them run better. For example, my engine too went out and with the 3.0L swap I'm adding the DMD and putting a little wall with holes drilled in it in the oil pan pick up to at least help with the oil starvation. I also plan on running the engine 1/2 a quart over. I mean the little things are what keep the engine going. Out here in Colorado the speed limit is 75, so I really don't think there is a set speed you shouldn't take your car over. It may sound stupid, but I went up to the mountains(a 300 mile drive) with a bad connecting rod 4 times, but since I took care of the engine, it was able to last a long time till the rod blew, which you can see the date in my sig. So basically I would say do the little things to keep your engine running longer.
