Well, here's more proof that the more we learn the less we know.

SVT = Special Vehicle Team = (is this a distinction such as LX that is applied by Ford such as an emblem on the car or just a term used by those involved?)

It is, but it isn't. Yes, SVT is a model line of a car, yet, SVT is also a divison of Ford. LX, GTS, GT, etc are just trim levels, with no division behind them. SVT is a small group of engineers and marketers that specifically design said car with certain things in mind..

So when an SVT rolls off the line does it have an SVT emblem on the car or is there another way to tell it apart just by it's appearance? Use a Contour as an example since that is what I am learning about.

Thanks,
Dan

Yes, it's badged off the line. the SVT contour differs from the standard Contours aesthetically in that it has SVT gauges (tach, higher speed limit I think as well), SVT floor mats, SVT badging in the rear, SVT wheels/tires, and more aggresive front/rear bumpers and side skirts. Obviously there are also the engine, braking, and suspension upgrades.

Here's a comparison of the outside changes from SVT to an SE

This one is different from stock. Removed orange reflector in headlights, and is lowered.

Put mesh in grill.

Both of those have a few custom things on them, but you can see the change in bumpers/sideskirts pretty well.

SVT=Special Vehicle Team

VINs for SVT Contours have a P68 in them. Regular Contours have a differant P code. I don't remeber what is is.

SVT is a trim level, much to the purist's chagrin.
The P## in VIN in the code is trim level, of which P68 is SVT.

BTW:
P65= 95-98 GL, 98.5-99 LX
P66= 95-98 LX, 98.5-00 SE
P67= 95-98 SE
