BLKOUT2: Rebirth. PRT 2011 track car build thread.

Update time! Made some big steps tonight toward finishing the chassis mods to the rear half of the car tonight, I'm focusing on all of the chassis changes at the moment, so I can get the car in paint ASAP.

Just to start it off, pics of what I all picked up yesterday, I have to say having racing supply warehouses in the area is a huge advantage, no waiting, no shipping, just walk in and walk out a few dollars down.

More new tool porn

Intake ducting, Dzus fasteners/weld plates, and the 6061 AL for all the new spacers.

I'll be using the AL for making new versions of the steel spacers i used to run. As well as for all the new ones needed for the tubular front LCAs and so on.

As you'll remember I cut out the original bumper mounting tabs, for the sake of tire clearance. Here's the new mounting solution.

I also did a little mock up to give an idea of where things are headed with the headlight intake. There is a lot of fiberglass work yet to be done on the light, as well as fabrication of the new sealed air box. The two will be connected via the 4" reinforced silicon coated ducting shown.

Continuing on with the side by sides of suspension component upgrades. I got the trailing arms back from welding. I had the sleeves and base connections tig welded to minimize and potential flex as well as ensure nothing comes apart. Also pictured are a few views of the tubular aft rear LCAs Thinkmoto produced some time ago. PRT will be offering something similar to complement the fore LCAs currently undergoing prototype.

Looks great! So your going to move the filter element to where the headlight is? Like a CAI kind of thing?

Those LCA's are looking great! So is PRT doing LCAs and rear toe arms?

The intake will remain a short ram setup like it's shown, only difference will be the filter will be in a sealed enclosure connected to the HL via the duct.

Yes, we will be producing both fore and aft tubular rear lower control arms. I'm hoping to have the prototype fore units completed by next weekend.

Awesome!! Thanks for the info! Like others on here I'm very interested.

OH! And quick question. I have adjustable tubular arms in the back, would those be the ones you mentioned were made by Thinkmoto? If so, will those offer any kind of camber adjustment? I've been meaning to get under there to see if they did at all with the other LCA in front. Doesn't seem so, maybe you can help clear that up.

If you're referring to the arms all the way toward the trunk(aft) those offer camber adjustment only.

FU josh, now I'm going to be day dreaming about what I need to do to finish my car at work.

I'm very curious to see where your going with those trailing arms... they look fantastic. I am assuming its going to be all solid mount? Its definitely going to alter the handling characteristics of the car, hopefully it wont be too far on the understeer side.

That's what I do every day at work! A little work, and a lot of thinking about the car builds. The thrailing arms are just running the ES poly bushings.

I just saw the spice rack in some pics, you sneaky bastard!

The rack is back •••••es!

That should have said TOE adjustment. From the factory, the contour comes with no method of adjusting camber anywhere on the car.

so just a recap with the rear suspension. you have the tubular solid mount toe arms (which looks surprisingly similar to the ones on my car that someone thought would look good powdercoated mustard gold ). and you've welded in mounts to the subframe so that now toe adjustment is done by altering the arm length and you don't have to worry about them 'self adjusting'. I am assuming you have something similar planned with the rear LCAs... which by having both you'll have some control over rear camber. You've beefed up the trailing arms which will negate most of the 'active-steering' feature of chassy (which will be interesting). beefed up the rear subframe and put a big-boy rear sway bar in. I'm assuming your also doing some form of a strut tower brace as well? (makes a hella difference in the cougar).

thats going to be pretty crazy on the track.

Terry, while I haven't yet, I do have intentions of making provisions for adjusting the fore LCAs. This would allow for some camber adjustment, but I'm not overly concerned about it in the rear. Just to note, the spacers for the rear toe arms(aft control arms) are not welded in, I'm replacing the steel units with AL for that little bit of weight savings. Toe can still be adjusted in minor increments via the stock method, or more exaggerated by adjusting the arms length as well.

The rear strut towers will have a welded in brace for 1 3/4" DOM tubing to stiffen things up. Once I get that handled I'll be removing the majority of the rear "deck" as well. Camber plates may be a future addition to the rear strut towers.

Put in about another 6 hours tonight. I did some work on the seat brackets, you can see just how low the seats are in the car in the exterior pictures. Got the Dzus weld plates finish welded to the body, shaved the front emblems, antenna and keyhole, also got some filler on for sanding tomorrow morning. I also did another test fit of the wheel with the new bumper mounting and all is happy. Time for bed, back at it early tomorrow.
