Starting Issues

Here's the deal. I have a 2.0 95 Mystique with 195,000 miles on it. Anytime the engine is cold (not started in at least 2 hrs) it starts up right away. If I drive it to the gas station (1 mile) turn it off, fill up and get in to restart it, it cranks and cranks and after messing with gas pedal and just a lot of cranking, it will finally start. Just now I went down and started it (it's cold) and it started fine. As an experiment, I shut it off and restarted it 3 more times. It got steadily harder to start. I cleaned the IAC a little while back. I'm thinking fuel issues, but as usual, you guys on here are the experts. Suggestions please!

You flooded the engine and it lost compression. Next time, try pushing the gas pedal all the way to the floor if it cranks and cranks but will not start. On a really bad day, remove the front bank spark plugs, put a teaspoon of engine oil in each fo the 3 cylinders, reinstall SP and wires. It should then start easily.

Correct me if im wrong..But yes sounds like he flooded the engine by playing with the gas pedal. But he went to the gas station and turned off and filled up and its just cranking and cranking isnt that somthing else wrong..Considering the fact that he didnt pedal it till after cranking a few times.

Could be but I doubt it. The cranking and cranking is probably a fast turning of the engine. If he posted a clearer description, then maybe we can diagnose if there is something else wrong. Short engine runs usually causes compression loss due to the gas going "into" the piston rings and making them lose compression.

Yeah i could see how its flooded if your cranking and hitting the gas at the same time.Hopefully he replys with alittle more that happend..Did he crank and crank and nothing??..Or did he crank and hit the gas at the same time?

Cranked and nothing

Cranked and nothing

I could crank and crank without no reaction from the engine. I only touched the gas pedal because absolutely nothing was happening. Hope that helps.

Ok thanks hope tonys chimes back in..When was the last time you changed the plugs? Plug wires?..Fuel filter??..You have alot of mileage somthing i would consider doing if not yet done.Might not solve the problem completely but should help.Hope tony chimes back in for some more advice.

Replace the ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature sensor).
This is the one for the computer, not the gauge.

Bingo

Bingo

Well, it was the ECT. Now after warming up, I can go out and restart it whenever. I do though have to tap and I mean tap on the gas to get it to start. Which may mean it's time for a new IAC, but again, with 195,000 miles I feel blessed everytime it doesn't strand me.

Thanks to all that posted.
