If it makes you feel better, in March of 2005, I bought a 1994 Taurus SHO with a ton of problems due to age and lack of maintenance. Over the next 18 months, a buddy and I ripped the car apart, replacing the engine, suspension, transmission, and everything in between, right down to all key sensors and Earl's stainless steel brake lines. I put $11,000 into her on top of the purchase price and ended up with a great car.
I sold her in March of this year because it just wasn't prudent for me to be juggling the costs and space issues associated with two vehicles.
That doesn't explain why I then bought a 1993 Town Car in August and sold it earlier this month for similar reasons. Unlike the SHO, the car was not a project -- it started out in great condition, and just needed a good bath inside and out. Sometimes, you just can't keep 'em. Hope my experience helps.
