I'm replacing the wheel bearing and need to get a new axle nut. My question is whether the nut is a dealer item, or can i find it someplace else ? The guy at AZ looked at me like i was crazy..

If they are in good condition they can be reused. Mine have been on and off at least 5 times.

Apparently you have an ability to visually recognize if the structural integrity, of a one time use Torque to Yield bolt, hasn't been compromised. Amazing.

You can (or could?) get them at Napa/Autozone, etc.

They are listed as a "Locking Axle Nut" or something similar.. The name (and I think the part number) should be listed in wheel bearing how-to. (Duratec Maintenance forum, "read-first" thread.)

I have heard two different things with the axle nuts. first is that they are suppose to be replaced each time they are taken off. next I have also heard that they can be reused a few times.

what makes it interesting is i remember one time we went to a dealer to get a set and they had to order them. seemed odd to me they wouldn't have any on hand if they where a one time use item.

but I have seen that often they fall apart when removed so there is no choice but to get new ones.

i tried to look that up first in the how-to, but all i get is a "page load error"....

Why don't I just go and take them off and put them back on again? Are you :censored::censored::censored::censored:ing kidding me?

I'm trying to provide useful information. I have had ZERO issues with my axle nuts, and they have been reused multiple times! :nonono:

I would try and find them somewhere else before going to the dealer. I bought a couple recently from my local dealer when I had to replace wheel bearings and they were $11 each! Then I look on rockauto and they're $2.50 each. Also keep in mind that if you need to replace a CV axle the new one you buy usually comes with a new axle nut.

What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?

He made a comment on your (in)ability to accurately rate the STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY of a TTY piece. You can't make assumptions that because it hasn't fallen of yet that it must be okay to repeat the procedure with anyone else.

Swimming with sharks and not dying does not mean that swimming with sharks is not dangerous.. it just means that YOU didn't die.

Easy guys. Technically, the OEM axle nuts are TTY, and the official recommendation must be to replace them any time they are removed. But, my experience is that the OEM axle nuts (the multi-layer packnut type) are better at retaining torque, even when re-used several times, than the aftermarket solid type nuts when new. I've found that if the OEM style nut still looks to be in good shape, it generally is, and will retain torque well. The aftermarket style, I've had even brand new ones require regular re-torqueing.

I've seen this same pattern on a number of vehicles, including the contour. And in general I would rather reuse an OEM nut a few times, than use a new aftermarket nut.

What makes them TTY? They do not use angle torque to stretch to deform stage. Many books I see say you can reuse at least once. If it will go full to 200 ft.lb. and hold without feeling like it's stripping, I say go for it. I have reused them before too. I wouldn't 5 times though. Ford has been recommending changing all suspension fasteners removed for years now. As far as my concern it's a revenue generator along with liability protection. The laminated nut is made like that to make the internal parts interfere with each other to prevent backing off torque. A conventional axle nut will work just as well if you either stake it or loctite after torque.

5x is about the limit. The locking nut from Ford can be re-used a few times, as it says in the service manual. The locking nut that ships with aftermarket half-shafts should not be re-used, IMO.

Quick question about the factory nut since I havent looked at it with the wheel off. Is it locked simply by torque or does it need to be punched or retained with a clip?
