have prob seriously on my mothers 96 contour. She told me that everytime she presses on the gas her batterylight comes on and the temp guage goes to the red. Soon as she lets off the gas the temp goes down and battery light goes off. Also if you turn heater fan on 1-2 batterylight comes on again turn on full blast the light goes off. same if you turn on AC max. She took the car to local car parts store and they said her alternator was fine yet when this all happens im told it smells like the alternator is overheating. Can anyone recall having any prob like this if so please help any info will be appreciated. For this is my mother's only car and she does Elderly home Healthcare for terminally ill patients. thank you for your time.

on phone with my mother found that a local mechanic tried putting an alternator on her car and said there was 2 thick wires on the alternator that 1 of them was disconnected so he posted it back on top of the post on the alternator. and installed new alternator and regulator. Yet prob still exists. I am not fammiliar with ford or its weird technology. "Works on RX-7's" Never heard of 2 wires on positive terminal on alternator. anyone have a clue as to what she may be talking about before i drive 3 hours to help her?

there should be only one thick wire and two plugs. One plug with three small wires and second plug with a single wire...if i am not mistaken...

Welcome :) . What engine (2.5 V6 Duratec or 2.0 I4 Zetec), transmission (auto or manual), miles on the car, and how old is the battery? You say they changed the alternator. What about the battery? Test the battery.

Edit. Battery test and alternator test.
Start by charging the battery well. Then test the battery and alternator.

Charge the battery well, then test battery and alternator.

Battery test. Engine off, headlights on for one minute. Voltage across battery terminals should be 12 to 12.5.

Alternator test. Engine running, voltage across battery terminals should be 14 to 14.5.
