98 zetec will not turn over

hello i have a 1998 zetec and it will not turn over not even try to crank . a few weeks ago i put the key in and turned it forward to start it and nothing i get the sound of the fuel pump primming but the starter will not work . so i put a new starter on last week and still nothing at all . so now i have ordered a new ignition switch not the keylock cylinder but the ignition switch it self . it wont come in untill tuesday so was just wondering if anyone has had this problem if so what could it be . when it first started this i could hit the starter and it would start but right before i put the new one on it would not even do that . so could it be the switch or is it somthing else. thanks for any help up front .
 
Not to ask a dumb question, but you are sure the battery isn't dead? Fuel pumps take a lot less juce than a starter...

Otherwise, I'm as stumped as you are. Ignition switch seems a good option and you can always check the fuses.

i have had the batty tested and charged but it was fine it did not need the charge . what fuses should i look at . is it posiable for the pump to prime and all other things to work and just the part of the switch that cranks the car to be bad because that what mine is doing .
 
i just looked at the fuses and relays and all are good . so now i guess i have to weight till tuesday to see if it is the ignition switch. also i was told at the part store that it could be a PATS problem what is this and what does this mean
 
well i just put the switch on the car and i get the same thing when i try to start it . so now i do not know what to try next . there are only 2 wires on the starter right . if anyone has anymore ideas let me know .
 
ok i got my car going it turns out that the starter i got from ebay that said new on it came with a bad selinoid on the starter . so i took the one off of my old burntout starter and put it on the new starter and it cranked right up. thanks for everyones help. personal note just because its new dont mean it works
 
for posterity, I4 (Zetec) equipped cars did not come with PATS (Passive Anti Theft System).

The telltale LED in the "Contour" logo in the center of the dash (or the clock, in 98 and earlier models) would not be present in a Zetec. In a Duratec, it would be there, and flash about once per second when the key is off.
