A couple issues with my 98

Hey all im new here and I have a few problems with my wifes 98. It has the V6 with auto trans. I did some serching with no results.

First problem is while driving if you press the brake and release there is a "click" noise that seams to be coming from the shifter. Its weird because its just one "click" every time the brake petal is released. I have taken apart the console to see if I could find the source but found nothing. However when it was apart the noise did get louder without the trim in place.

Second is the power mirrors and dome light do not work. I have checked all the fuses witch are fine but the fuse block did not have power at fuse 34 (mirror fuse). I tried to back trace the source of this only to get frustrated and quit for now. Any clues as what may be happening?

Anyways my wife loves that car. Were over in germany, the car has a semi interesting story. It was first purchased by the US goverment and used as a embassy car up in frankfurt. Its US spec but per the contract ford had to put in a KM/H gauge cluster and do some other stuff to make it better for european driving. After its usefulness as a embassy car it has been bought and sold by GI's stationed here in germany.

I need to rewire the radio because someone cut the factory harness off and now it has no constant power to keep radio stations programed and such. Also the wheels need balanced, there is a horrible shutter when I take it over 120 KM/H on the autobahn but overall a good little car for my wife to drive to work and such. Thanks for the help

Welcome to the site! I'm new here too, but I think I can offer soem assistance.

My 95 Auto has the same clicking noise, but not when in gear. Only when in park. These vehicles were equipped with a safety switch that doesn't allow you to shift the vehicle out of gear without pressing the brake pedal. When I'm in Park, if I press the brake, I hear a relay clicking. This is releasing the switch to allow me to shift out of park into drive. I've never heard the noise when driving, but I would start there. The switch is located right above the brake pedal.

With regards to the the dome light / mirrors, are you sure that you have a good bulb in the dome light? I would try to use a multimeter and remove the domelight bulb to determine if you are actually getting the 12 volts there. Also, do the courtesy lights come on in the foot wells of the car? If so, check the domelight switch. Mine has three positions - off, on and 12 second delay. The delay setting means that it will stay on for 12 seconds when I open the door or until I put the key in the ignition.

If you are sure the fuses are fine, the wire is probably broken. May need to rewire it elsewhere.

Thats what I was afraid of, I hate chasing wiring problems down.

I'll look into that relay suggestion, its not a mechanical problem just the wife is annoyed with it.

Just run the wire from Fuse 32 (Radio) to Fuse 34 and you should be good to go. Autozone or Advance sell those quick clips that you put on the fuse holder. The fuses sit on it and then you crimp the top of the clip(Fuse 32) (with a piece of wire) to the top of the other clip (Fuse 34).

We dont have a autozone here in germany, however I see what your saying just make a jumper that will power that fuse. *crosses fingers* just hope that the broken section of wire is not grounded somewhere.
