Best Clutch

In my old SVT i had a 3.0L Hybrid Motor (and yes, 50,000 later its still running with no problems!!!) and i ran a Spec Stage 2 clutch. Its deffinetly grippier and be ready for "clutch chatter" at idle. It can be annoying, but it never got loud enough to negate the performace aspect of the clutch.

It was perfect for my Hybrid, with all the bolt on mods i did. I believe i had room for more power as well, but i never got to that point. I finnaly sold her to NorCalCoug and shes still going strong.

you guys dont think the SVT clutch can hold 250 wtq? I just put a new SVT unit in my 3.0 cougar, and I plan on getting a 55-75 shot- am I a no go on the holding?

terry hanes said it will hold 250-300TQ im sure your fine

Hey, I'm no genius here but I do know that with sustained torque levels like that the clutch will wear out.

My SVT clutch held ~270 ft-lbs wheel torque based on the dyno data from from my first turbocharged 3L engine. It even held it through a night at the drag strip.

However, when I pulled the clutch to put in a spec stage3 I found that although the linings were still good, the springs were starting break from the beating they were taking and there was a lot of evidence of heat on the flywheel and pressure plate. I also found a piece of one of the broken springs that was being flung around the bell housing and nicking up the aluminum all over the place. It was only a matter of time before those went then the rest of the disk followed.

So two points from my experience of torque loads that high on an SVT clutch:

1. When running quick through the gears the disk takes longer to clamp up under those loads. This increases the wear. Multiple passes down the strip will cause the clutch to overheat and slip. If you don't go too far and let it cool down it will not destroy the clutch but wear is accelerated.

2. Springs are too soft and wear out faster and tend to fragment. Situation will be worse with filled engine mounts.

In my experience, the SVT clutch was fine for two years on a 3L engine. Thats probably 20K miles on it and it was good. With a top of the line higher torque NA 3L with an aggessive drive who likes to slam the clutch through the gears, an SVT clutch will probably break its springs though it should hold fine. If you are a normal spirited driver it will be fine.
Nitrous shots of 75 and above on even a 2.5L will generate torque loads above 250 ft-lbs and should be treated accordingly.

SPEC stage 1 is in my opinion, the perfect clutch for a daily driver feel, with excellent performance when rowing through the gears. Stop and go feels like stock, but it hits hard when banging gears. I've got 39k miles on my stage 1, and it still engages like the day it was installed. All 39k miles have been with the 3L, at ~200+FWHP, and had a few bottles of nitrous at 270-300WHP/WTQ. I don't doubt that the stage 2 could possibly handle more power, but why go with something if it's not necessary? I believe the longevity of the clutches goes down, as you go up in stages. So the stage 1 will last you longer than the stage 2, and so on. Not to mention, the stage 1 is cheaper than the 2 or 3. Trust me, with the proper TOB, the stage 1 is by far your best option for anything ranging from a mildly modded or stock Contour, up to ~300whp/wtq Contour. I'd be willing to bet it could even handle more, but SPEC doesn't recommend going over ~270wtq I believe it is? I guess they're underrated.

I priced out just getting a clutch installed and they charge around $700 to $900 if you go to a trans shop. I think stock is around $300. Everyone says to just get a stage 1.

If you dont plan on some crazy mods in the future, then go with OEM SVT Clutch...I honestly cant stand the Spec clutch chatter anymore..Its literally embarassing at red lights when you let go the clutch and all everyone hears is your car chattering :blackeye:

I got my HMS tranny with the coated option(I think it was $250). I'm running a Stage 1 and Spec flywheel and I get ZERO rollover noise about 95% of the time. The other 5% of the time is half as loud as it was during break-in. I really babied the clutch for the first 500 miles and the combination of all these things really shows...or hears?

I would totally recommend the coated internal option if you are having your transmission done by TH. Well worth the money.

well i got off the phone earlier with ford and they will install my new clutch and resurface the flywheel for a ballpark estimate of $1500  :help:  , i started laughing and told the guy i'd call him later, looks like im ordering a spec 1 and getting it installed somewhere

Whats the HMS and what is the "coated option"?

Whats the HMS and what is the "coated option"?

HMS stands for Haines Motor Sports. The company is self owned by a guy named Terry Haines who rebuilds many Contour and Cougar MTX 75's. People ship their transmissions to him from all over the United States and even canada. He is from Michigan. I'm not to sure as to what the benefits of his coated option are, but I do not have it.

Terry Haines is one of the head design engineers for the MTX-75 and is now a retired Ford engineer. He has a motorsports business solely dedicated to the contour and the MTX-75. Hes done work on many of the owners MTX-75s including myself.

i have been wondering how much shipping would be on this. or just drive up and sit in a hotel lol. or drive 2 cars. come home and go back and get it. my car that is

from TH:

Koated Kogbox is
> wher all the> gears,blockers,syncros,shafts etc are
> treated with 3> types of baked on hi-tec coatings to
> *reduce> wear*reduce friction*increase
> strength*reduce 'gear> rollover' nois.This runs $300
> per trans.

do yourself a favor and buy a stage3

Why, so he can tell his buddies that he has a stage 3? There is NO added benefit of going to a stage 3 with relatively stock HP. A stock SVT clutch is enough for a bolt-on 2.5L. A stage 1 is pleanty for a full bolt-on 3L. I thought I'd be testing the limits with nitrous on my stage 1, but it didn't even bat an eyelash. Quit promoting the stage 3 as if it's right for everyone! Please don't go into sales, if you aren't already. "Oh, you're looking to buy a television for a 10'x10' room? You should go with a 60" big screen, because that's what I have!":nonono:
