CD4E, sudden problems

The plan is to open it up to find out what broke in it. Two days after trading for it the transmission started buzzing - then started slipping badly - then it acts like it is in neutral. A pressure test shows normal pressure initially (it will engage for about 50 feet) - then drops off to nothing.

My son is enrolled at a local JUCO and is in an automatic transmissions class, the just finished pulling the subframe out today. Hopefully next week they will be able to get it pulled apart for a look inside. I bought a seal / gasket set and the ATSG CD4E book, but the book shows many specialty tools involved at various points - so I was wondering if the tools were all available in one kit. I'm guessing most won't be needed - but???

your problems sound pretty deep

your problems sound pretty deep

I was under the impression that you just had a problem with 2nd and thus maybe the band.

Actually you need NO special tools to pull apart. A few tools made from pvc fittings from the hardware store, some all thread and a piece of bar stock will get to the tools needed to compress the springs to remove the clips holding the clutch packs together. That should get you to the point to discover what is the problem.

Depending what you have to replace, you may or may not need the tool kit, but if you have pulled apart the clutch packs you should get the seal installer, I think about 5 pieces.

If you replace hard parts then you likely need to get the tool kit so that you can measure the clearances. But if you start replacing hard parts, you will quickly exceed the value of the car, so think about not if you could do it, but should you do it.

Good luck

I use a very thin feeler gauge and patience to get piston seals in. Not time efficient, but worked great. Oil up the lip and bore so harder for the feeler to dig into it. To measure hard parts changed you will need at least a dial indicator, I cobbled up pieces lying around to make my own depth tools, did not buy any specialty stuff at all. Most valuable piece was a piece of surface plate used to pick up accurate point in space off the case split line.
