Check Engine Light Comes On During Acceleration.

Dear CEG'ers,

I have a predictament that hopefully somebody in Contour.org has experienced. I tried a search (a quick one) but did not come up with the resukts I need. I have a 95 SE. I have recently replaced the exhaust with a stock SVT exhaust. I have also replaced the stock air-box with an SVT Airbox and filter. Now, I have a CEL come on at times when I accelerate. It does not happen all the time nor stay on for any particular length of time. I have also had an incidence of the idle rpm's dropping below 500 and fluctuating ("Ray" I believe had something similiar). I "Adjusted" the stop on the throttle body and adjusted the accelerater linkage to see if this would help. It did for the most part but I know this is not a correct fix. I read in Ray's thread to check for an air leak. Where would I look? How would changing the stock airbox affect this?

I really would appreaciate any help anyone could give me.

Sincerely,

Johnny T.

You could probably receive more help if you posted this in the Troubleshooting section. A Mod might be able to move it for you.

As far as air leaks I'd be worried about it getting into the intake tube past the MAF sensor. So anywhere in the tube that could possibly be leaking. Check to make sure those clamps looks snug and that no air can be getting in between the throttle body and the mass air flow sensor.

Even if the light went back off, a code will be stored for quite a while. Whatever codes are stored will help in determining what is going on. At this point, with as little as you have told us, any answer would be pure speculation.

Codes 181 & 189

Codes 181 & 189

I took your advice and went to Autozone in Portage and had the codes read. The very helpful manager said it was codes 181 & 189. He also suggested it was something with the MAF sensor. I bought some CRC MAF cleaner and followed the directions on the can (Incidentally, what is the correct Torx tool to use on the MAF?). Anyway, I could not remove the sensor from the MAF body so I sprayed the cleaner down the "port" and let it dry. Later I re-installed same and noticed a big difference in aceleration. I also do not have the Check Engine Lights comming on.
Please feel free to comment.

Sincerely,

Johnny T.

As you found out, you do not need to remove the MAF sensor from the housingto clean it. Also check if you have cracks or leaks at the hose clamps. Your codes suggest a vacuum leak before the throttle body.

The tool you need to remove the sensor itself is a "piloted torx". I don't know what size. I agree with Tony in that you are better off not removing the sensor by itself. Most of them have sealer in the screw head to discourage tampering with them.

if your idle fluxuates, check the intake mani. gaskets for leaks. easy way to do this is to spray a little carb cleaner around the gasket with the engine running and see if it changes anything. it should seal the leak for a second when you spray it in there
