Hello again. This is kinda getting old. Just replaced an O2 sensor, then an evaporative emissions hose that had a hole. Now I'm getting 0300 and 0306 codes. I just put in new Autolite APP764's with no change. Gapped to .052, and I've got newer Magnecor's (last March). The coil is about 129K miles old, is there a good way to test the coil? I also read that this could be from a bad Cam position sensor, does anyone know the best way to test that. I'm low on money, and can't keep buying new stuff if it doesn't fix this miss???? Any other ideas are appreciated. Thanks.

coil testing?

coil testing?

OK. Per the Hayne's manual, I tested the ignition coil by measuring the resistance of the outside and inside terminals. Hayne's calls for a reading of .5 +/- .05, and I'm getting a reading of 1.5 on one side and 1.1 on the other. Now, what the heck that means,.... . Is that a sign the coil is going? Help, please.

Primary tested at .9-1.1. The secondary all tested a bit low, from 12.75 to 12.79. That wouldn't be enough to cause such bad misfires, would it. Just last week, it was running great. I would expect an ignition coil to slowly fade away, not just die overnight. What do you think about those readings?

"Resistance should be 12.8-13.1 kilohms. If secondary resistance is not within specification, replace the coil pack."

Yours does not appear to be within specs.

Dang, CEG down over my whole break, just when I needed it most! Well, I took the coil down to autozone, they tested it when I voiced my concerns, and the lady working said it tested within their specs. I really don't have $$ to buy a coil if this isn't the problem. What to do, what to do? I wonder if they will take the coil back if it isn't the problem?

Don't buy a new one (yet). Have them test the new one in front of you. If the new one has the same specs, you know yours is fine.

or you could find someone local to you and swap coil packs and see if that does it ... or go to a junk yard or find someone on CEG that has one for sale ...

Tony, maybe that's the way to go. Brian, I was hesitant about a junkyard one, who knows how good that one would be. And I couldn't get any local CEG's, due to the boards being down. Are there any other issues that could cause a misfire? I have replaced the O2 sensor, plugs, tested the wires, Cam position sensor, crank sensor, cleaned the MAF, new fuel filter. Just don't know what else it could be?

They tested OK with an OHM meter. Could that still be the problem? I got a resistance about 6-7 ohms. same reading when I tested my wife's truck wires. If I spent $$ on magnecors for them to crap out after 6 months>>...... , I may just go postal!

I'm not sure that testing resistance is the best way to determine if you have arcing. They will test fine unless there is a load or high current through them.

Also, there are a few people here on the forum that have had problems with Magnacores so I wouldn't rule them out.

Good luck!

well when I check my zetec wires, not only where they all different, obviously they where all different length but it didn't tell me that the chugging I was getting was from the plug wires ... get a set from autozone and try them out, or put you stock wires back on and see where you are at ... also ask goonz but his magnecors didn't like anything but champion spark plugs ...

well if you haven't swapped the wires out you need to try that ...
And when was it that you gapped the plugs? You may want to do that again (0.054) if it is more than a few months. Chongo previously posted that his gaps were way off after a few months on the car,.

I gapped the new plugs about 2 minutes before I put them in. OK, maybe I will try the new wires first. That kinda fits, as the car idles OK, but misfires under load. What the heck do I do about the $100 magnecors not working? Bastids!

OK. Talked to Magnecor, they said the best bet is to send them my wires, let them test them, and they will send me a new set. But I need them NOW! So I'm gonna have to buy $55 autolites, then spe3nd $$ to ship the old ones to Magnecor, and then I will have a new set that will do the same thing! God, this sux!

I'll give that a shot. Why not. At this point, I'm starting to be very angry with my car. My "replacement" is a 1994 Cavalier w/ 220K miles!
