My car wouldn't start recently. The tow truck guy said besides the battery, I needed a new fuel pump.

So, I brought it in. New battery and terminals (apparently I tried too many times to start it and melted the terminals/cables) - $229.

Now, for the fuel pump, because it's a V6 and "it's hard to get to" - that's an additional $584 of which 270 is the part!

So, to fix a car that wouldn't start and has had no previous problems... $813.

Does this sound right??

Really?

Really?

584 dollars just to replace the fuel pump???

Unfortunately, I live in manhattan (my car is in CT), so I can't really do it myself (don't really have the know how either).

Print the how tos and armed with it, go to another shop and have them give a quote based on our printed how tos. That way, he/she knows they can sign up and post if they have questions during the install.

Chris and I did a pump swap on my car in under 45 min. Pulled the rear seat, bent back the previous cut metal, pounded the snap ring out, quick turn on the pump and its out. Pulled everything apart, snipped the wires, wired in the new FSVT pump, put everything back together, installed and I was running like a cham again! Very easy to do. Only cost in switching out a fuel pump should be a Focus SVT pump from Ford.. You can do the rest with a hammer, screwdriver, tin snips, and some patience.

$500 plus or $100. That's a good motivator for me! LOL! Why I started learning cars. F getting raped by some grease monkey.
