Is there a CV boot replacement how to? I can't seem to find one on either new or old forums nor on my Ford CD.

Please help?

TIA

I remember reading that it was not a good idea to get those twin "clip ons". IIRC, Ray posted that those come out after "a few miles". If you decide to change the boots, it was suggested that you go with the "real" thing.

Recently, I noticed that indy shops do not replace CV boots anymore. Apparently, it cost the same or as much just to replace the entire CV joint assembly.

well I can thing of two or three ways

  1. remove axle and fit a one peice boot
  2. install a two part boot
  3. replace axle
the two part boots normally glue and have clips to hold them together but I don't believe they are a long term fix ...

It's a small hole at the moment and it doesn't get driven much either. But there is some water oozing out which really sucks. If I have to pull the axle out to replace the boot, I might as well put new axles in.

And as of yesterday, the truck isn't running and I'm in the middle of putting the coilovers in. Also putting new ball joints in and that just isn't coming off at all. What a huge PITA those are.

You can get one from Ford for like 30-50 bucks. I had to replace mine when I changed my clutch because I put a nice slice in it. The boot comes with new clamps and everything. Let me see if I can find the receipt with the part number....

Edit: Part number for the outer boot was F8RZ-3A331-C, retail is $49.12, I paid $32.42 from Steve at Tousley Ford, 1-800-328-9552, ask for Steve and mention you would like to buy under the SVT Performance group account.

like I said though...you pay 40 to 50 for a boot, that most likely has already worn on bearings if the grease has come out...plus you have to pull the axle apart...way more labor than just replacing an axle....or get a brand new "heavier duty" axle for 80 shipped and slap it in there!!!!

The prices for their boots have really gone up since I purchased some in 10/02. The inner boot is even more expensive because it includes the tripod rollers. List price for the inners were $69.32, now they list for $122.
A whole after market axle is the way to go, with factory prices that high.

Well I just bought this boot on 7/01/06 so it wasn't that long ago  Plus if the inner boot is really that much I bet Steve's discount is pretty nice. Sometimes I ended up getting almost 50% off list price.
